
Niagara Rallies To Defeat QU Women's Volleyball In Four Sets

Hamden, Conn. - The Quinnipiac volleyball team got off to a strong start, winning the first set 25-22, but Niagara came back to win the final three sets to take a -1 win over the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Burt Kahn Gymnasium.
With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 3-22 on the season and 1-12 in the MAAC, while Niagara improves to 10-13 overall and 7-6 in the MAAC. Overall set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-16 in favor of the Purple Eagles.
Freshman setter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) had a strong effort with 29 assists and six kills in 13 attempts for a .462 hitting percentage. Miller's tip kill on a fake set enabled the Bobcats to close out the first set 25-22. She also assisted back-to-back kills from freshman Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) as part of a 5-0 run that stretched a 12-11 lead up to 17-11 and gave Quinnipiac control of the set.
The Bobcats also started the second set strong, surging ahead 13-9 on one of four solo blocks (six total) from sophomore Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.). Niagara rallied from there to take a 16-14 lead, and after Quinnipiac earned the next point on a Coffey kill, Niagara went on a 7-0 run to take command of the set at 23-15 and level the match at 1-1.
The third set was tight the whole way, and the Bobcats went ahead 18-16 on a service ace from junior libero Cody Michaels (Versallies, Ky.). Niagara's Alexis Gray, though, keyed a 6-0 run with two straight service aces to put the Purple Eagles in front 22-18. Miller staved off one set point with a service ace to cut the lead to 24-21, but the Purple Eagles came back with a kill to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set saw Quinnipiac stay within 15-13 after a kill from sophomore hitter Jamie Termotto (Smithtown, N..Y.) and a Niagara error, but the Purple Eagles earned the next five points to surge ahead 20-13 and went on from there for a 25-16 win to secure the 3-1 win in the match.
Junior hittier Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) matched Coffey for team-high honors with nine kills apiece, while junior Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Ind.) led in digs with 10. Melissa McGwin (13), Nicole Matheis (12), and Alex Stone (11) were all in double figures in kills for Niagara.
Quinnipiac returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Canisius in another MAAC matchup at Burt Kahn Gymnasium, beginning at 1 p.m.
