NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac University field hockey team stormed back from a one-goal deficit to defeat Sacred Heart, 3-2 in overtime, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at Yale University's Johnson Field in New Haven, Connecticut. Quinnipiac improves to 5-9 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC while Sacred Heart drops to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Lily Shemo (Luzerne, Pennsylvania) scored twice including the game-winner in overtime after Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) scored the game-tying goal with 1:25 to play in regulation to force overtime. Shemo also tied the game midway through the second period giving her three goals in her last three games. Bobcats' leading scorer Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Meeting , Pennsylvania) picked up two assists to give her seven points in her last three games and 14 for the year.
The first half of play was starving for offense as both teams played back and forth but neither created any scoring opportunities. Sacred Heart had the first shot on goal of the game which was turned away by Quinnipiac goalkeeper Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) after the senior cage-minder brilliantly read its trajectory through traffic in front of the Bobcats' goal.
Quinnipiac had the first Grade-A opportunity after earning a corner with a little more than half the first frame to play. Michelle Federico's (Cheshire, Connecticut) insert was on-point and Meghan McCullough (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) made a stop for King. King blasted a shot through the crowd in front of the Sacred Heart cage but the ball sailed high and was waved off.
Conaboy made three huge defensive stops in the first half, coming out of the cage and challenging two plays. The first was a Pioneers' two-on-none breakaway that was thwarted when Conaboy denied Danielle Gallagher with a sliding tackle as she kicked the ball towards the Pioneers' sideline.
After another stop, the Pioneers earned a corner, which resulted in the first half's only goal. Nichole Tolli scored off a pass from Rachel Claroni to give the Pioneers the lead heading into the break.
Midway through the second half, Kyla Johns (Darien, Connecticut) knocked down an attempted clearing pass by Sacred Heart and took off through the Pioneers' defensive zone. After a hard foul just inside the circle, Quinnipiac was awarded a corner. McCullough sent a shot on goal from the top of the circle that was re-directed off-line and on to Shemo's stick as she tipped it past Altepeter to tie the game at 1-1.
Moments later, Sacred Heart re-took the lead when Claroni blasted a loose ball on the Quinnipiac cage where a screened Conaboy was unable to stop it as the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-1 advantage.
At the two-minute warning, Sacred Heart's Tolli was hit with a green card and Quinnipiac took a man-advantage. Seconds later, Quinnipiac found itself with a corner with King's shot finding the back of the cage to tie the game at 2-2. Federico and McCullough both picked up assists on the play.
In overtime, Megan Osanitsch (Harwington, Connecticut) played a ball from the top of the circle on goal, which was stopped by Altepeter, but knocked loose leaving Shemo with a wide-open look at the cage.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 18 when it hosts Siena - also 2-0 in the MAAC - at 12 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. Prior to the start of the afternoon's game, Quinnipiac Athletics will honor Megan Conaboy, Megan Osanitsch, Meghan McCullough and Haley Swartz as part of Senior Day.
