HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Providence College, 3-2, in a non-conference match-up at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac drops to 4-9 on the season while the Friars improve to 3-11.
Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) and Felicia Costanzo (Lakeland, New York) both scored for the Bobcats while Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania) and Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) added assists. Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) stopped seven of Providence's 10 shots on goal.
Neither team put together much of an offensive attack as halftime produced a 0-0 score that featured Providence with a 3-2 advantage in shots, with both sides even in penalty corners, 2-2. Coming out of the break, Providence's Abby Thornton gave the Friars a 1-0 lead with her third goal of the season off a pass from Emma Mackie. Moments later Quinnipiac evened the score when Costanzo found the back of the cage for her third of the season and second in as many games. Barlow crossed a pass across the goal mouth where McCullough picked up the ball in traffic. She then passed to Costanzo for the tip-in to even the score, 1-1.
Later in the half, Providence's Adrienne Houle scored two unanswered goals to push the Friars' lead to 3-1. The first came after a furious scramble in front of the Bobcats' cage and featured Conaboy making four straight stops. The Bobcats struggled to get the ball out of their zone and Houle punched it in. With just under five minutes to play, Houle collected a rebound off another Conaboy save and dribbled it past Quinnipiac's goalie to give Providence a two-goal lead.
With less than a minute to play, Reilly deposited her fourth goal of the year to cut Providence's two-goal lead in half and pull Quinnipiac within a goal, 3-2. Barlow picked up the assist on the marker, playing the ball to Reilly on the doorstep. Reilly popped the ball up and then batted it past Providence's Megan Guilbert. A late push fell short for Quinnipiac as time expired.
The Bobcats are back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 with a neutral site contest against MAAC foe Sacred Heart at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. at 7 p.m.
