
Zaid Hearst Tabbed MAAC and College Sports Madness Player of the Week

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac senior guard Zaid Hearst (Bethesda, Maryland) was named MAAC Player of the Week and the College Sports Madness Player of the Week on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014. Hearst led the Bobcats to a 2-0 record which included a signature win over Pac-12 foe Oregon State.
Hearst factored heavily in both Quinnipiac wins this past week, averaging 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. On Thursday night, Hearst flirted with a triple-double when the junior guard finished with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in an 80-65 win over Lehigh. Hearst went 6-for-11 from the field with his eight assists serving as a career high.
On Sunday afternoon, Hearst helped Quinnipiac upset Pac-12 foe Oregon State with 24 points, three rebounds and two assists in the game. Hearst had 20 points in the first half – a season best – while going 5-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-8 from long range. On the other side of the ball, Hearst locked down Gary Payton II – the team's leading scorer and the son of nine-time NBA All-Star Gary Payton – holding him scoreless on 0-for-3 shooting. Hearst was also perfect from the free-throw line, making all 11 of his attempts.
Hearst shot 52.4 percent (11-21) from the floor for the week and 100 percent from the free-throw line (11-11).
He has 1,249 career points at Quinnipiac which have him ranked 20th in program history. In the Division I era, Hearst ranks eighth, staring down James Feldeine '10 (1,320) for the seventh position. He trails Robert Vacca '73 (1,265) for 19th place on the all-time list.
Quinnipiac enjoys some time off for the holiday before returning to the TD Bank Sports Center on Monday, Dec. 29 against Maine. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
