HAMDEN, Conn. - Former Quinnipiac University Women's Soccer
Assistant Coach Mick McDermott was recently named an assistant
coach of the Iranian national soccer team.
McDermott worked with the Quinnipiac women's soccer program in the
2002 and 2003 seasons as an assistant coach and fitness coach.
McDermott also played with Quinnipiac Men's Soccer Head Coach Eric
DaCosta, and for Women's Soccer Head Coach Dave Clarke with the
Connecticut Wolves.
"Even though it's been a few years since Mick coached at
Quinnipiac, seeing a former assistant and strength and conditioning
coach reach such a high level, you take pride as a program in the
accomplishments of not only your players, but your coaching staff,"
said Clarke. "It shows how people have used Quinnipiac as a
stepping stone and progressed beyond the school."
McDermott was hired as a fitness coach with the Iranian national
soccer program and will work with the team's new head coach, Carlos
Querioz, one of the world's top coaches and a former coach of
Manchester United and Real Madrid. He will also work alongside
goalkeeper coach Dan Gaspar, a former men's soccer coach at
University of Hartford. The new coaching staff will work through
the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
"Mick was a passionate, excellent player, and to see him move on
in his coaching career is gratifying," said DaCosta. "To have
somebody like Mick work alongside Coach Clarke says a lot about his
program. To see him move on to the very highest level and have that
connection with Quinnipiac is great for all of us. We always want
to see people move on and promote the University and the game. Mick
has done that well and we're proud to say that he had a connection
here at Quinnipiac."
