HAMDEN,
Conn. - Quinnipiac University senior men's lacrosse player Alex
Marotto (South Windsor, Conn.) has been named the Turfer New
England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Player of the
Week, the organization today announced. Playing the final game of
his career on senior day, Marotto scored a career-high five goals,
including the game-winner in overtime to give the Bobcats an 11-10
sudden-victory win over Fairfield on Saturday. In addition, the
Bobcats moved up to No. 7 in the final NEILA Top Eight
Poll.
On the game-winner, Marotto picked up the rebound of a Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas) shot on the doorstep before slipping it past Stags goalie Joe Marra 44 seconds into the extra session. Marotto finished with 15 goals of his 19 career goals in his senior season. He showed a flair for the dramatic in the last two regular-season finales, scoring the game-winner in both. In addition to this year's capper, Marotto scored the game-winning goal with 17 seconds left of last year's regular-season finale at Bellarmine.
At 8-6 (4-3 ECAC), the Bobcats ended the season in third place in ECAC Lacrosse, behind NCAA Tournament qualifiers Denver and Loyola.
