BROOKLYN, N.Y. Ashley Valentine (Friendship, Md.) scored four times and three Bobcats recorded four points in a 14-6 win over Long Island University Friday afternoon. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team and also marked their first Northeast Conference victory of the season. The Bobcats' record now stands at 3-4 overall with a 1-1 mark in the NEC. The loss dropped the Blackbirds to 1-1 in conference and 2-6 overall.
Katy Delagi (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on two more, while Kelly Bruneau (Cheshire, Conn.) netted one and assisted on three others. This was the first time this season that three Bobcats have recorded four points in the same game.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead in the first 12:26 of the game. Delagi scored her first goal just 38 seconds into the game, sparking the Bobcats' early dominance of the Blackbirds. Held scoreless for the next seven minutes of play, Valentine's first of the game started a five minute stretch that saw Quinnipiac build the lead to five.
Long Island's Christie Wienckowski scored the Blackbirds' lone goal of the first half with just over 15 minutes remaining in the opening period of play. Quinnipiac took a 7-1 lead into halftime after Janelle Lopez (Chula Vista, Calif.) scored her second and Valentine added her third with just over ten minutes to play.
Valentine found the back of the net for the fourth time in the game 5:48 into the second half on the first of Delagi's two assists. Long Island responded with a 3-0 run of their own as Wienckowski added her second and Jenna Schauder scored and assisted on the next two goals.
The Bobcats stopped the run and built the lead back up to seven on consecutive goals by Kelly Calabrese (West Islip, N.Y.), Meghan Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) and Nicole Fiore (Monroe, Conn.). Wienckowski scored her third on a free position shot, but the Bobcats were too much down the stretch as they scored three more times including Lyndsey Banach's second of the season to seal the win.
Tiffany Manzi (Feeding Hills, Mass.) was held without a point for the first time all season, but managed to cause three turnovers and pick up a groundball. Hannah Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) stopped 10 Blackbird shots in collecting her third win of the season. She also caused a turnover and collected a groundball before giving way in net to Lexi Destefano (Brookfield, Conn.) for the final 6:50 of the game.
Five Bobcats recorded multi-point efforts and eight different players found the back of the net in the game. The 14 goals tied the team's second highest offensive output of the season, while also tying their mark for fewest goals allowed in a game with six.
The Bobcats look to continue their strong play when they return to action Sunday in Staten Island, N.Y. against the Seahawks of Wagner College. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start time.
