Volleyball Closes Out Non-Conference Play With Loss to Providence

HANOVER, N.H. – The Quinnipiac volleyball program wrapped up non-conference play against the Providence Friars and fell in five sets on Sunday afternoon in Hanover.
Elena Giacomini recorded a double-double with a team-high 24 kills and 11 digs. Yagmur Gunes recorded 15 kills and 11 digs for a double-double.

SET ONE (27-25, Quinnipiac)
The Bobcats opened the match with a 5-4 lead before taking an early timeout. Out of the break, the two teams traded points, but Quinnipiac still held a 16-13 lead as the Friars called a timeout.
After the Providence timeout, the Bobcats and Friars each scored six points, keeping the distance to three (22-19) with the Bobcats still in front. After Providence called their final timeout of the set, the Friars shrunk the deficit to one which caused the Bobcats to call a timeout. Quinnipiac scored three of the next five points to seal the victory in the opening set.
SET TWO (23-25)
The Friars opened the second set on a 12-8 run which forced Quinnipiac to call a timeout. After the break, the Bobcats cut their deficit to two, 15-13, forcing the Friars to use a timeout of their own.
After a timeout from Providence, the Bobcats went on a 5-2 run to take an 18-17 lead. After the Friars called their final timeout of the set, Providence used a 4-1 run to take back the lead as QU called their final timeout of the set. Out of the break, the Friars kept the pressure on and finished off the set with a 25-23 win.
SET THREE (12-25)
Providence jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage which caused the Bobcats to call their first timeout of the third set.
The Friars continued their dominance in the third set, finishing the set on a 19-11 run to take the two-set to one lead.
SET FOUR (25-20)
With their backs against the walls, the Bobcats came out strong in the fourth set with a 11-5 run to force Providence to use a timeout. After a 4-2 run from the Bobcats, the Friars used their final timeout of the set.
Providence cut their deficit down to 19-14 as the Bobcats used their first timeout of the fourth set. After the QU timeout, the Bobcats were able to close out the set, 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set.
SET FIVE (6-15)
The Friars hopped out to a quick 6-1 lead, forcing Quinnipiac to use an early timeout. Out of the break, the Bobcats made it a 9-5 ballgame.
After Providence called a timeout, the Friars used a 6-1 run to close out the set and match.
