Bobcats Down SPU in OT Thriller, Advance to MAAC Quarterfinals

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – The Quinnipiac Women's Basketball program won its opening round game at the 2024 Hercules Tires MAAC Women's Basketball Championship, as the No. 7 Bobcats defeated No. 10 Saint Peter's by the final score of 68-63 (OT).
With the win, the Bobcats will advance to the quarterfinal round of postseason play. Quinnipiac will take on No. 2 Niagara on Wednesday, March 13 at 3:30 PM from Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
Four different Bobcats registered double-digit point efforts in the victory. QU was led by Ava Sollenne (19 points, 6-9 3FG) and Karson Martin (18 points).
The two sides traded points early into this contest before the Bobcats started to establish a lead. Karson Martin knocked down a triple to give the Bobcats a five-point lead just over halfway through the opening quarter.
Saint Peter's would tie the game at 15, but it was the Bobcats who got five quick points to head into the media timeout up 20-15. Out of the break, Bri Bowen would knock down two free-throws to give Quinnipiac a seven-point advantage.
The Bobcats and Peacocks traded points to open the second quarter. Karson Martin would extend the lead back to eight with a three to lead into the media timeout. Quinnipiac's lead would get as high as twelve before ending the half up nine.
The Peacocks opened the second half knocking down back-to-back threes to force Quinnipiac to use a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bobcats used a pair of triples to help build a nine-point lead at the third quarter media timeout.
Out of the media timeout, the Peacocks were able to bring the deficit down to five as the Bobcats headed into the final quarter with a 48-43 lead.
Grace LaBarge kicked off the final frame knocking down both of her free-throws. After Saint Peter's made it a one-possession game, Paige Girardi made a strong drive to the hoop and got the layup to fall, making it a five-point lead at the media.
Saint Peter's was able to shut down the Quinnipiac offense as they tied the game at 54 to send it into overtime.
With Quinnipiac being down one, Ava Sollenne stepped up in a huge way, knocking down back-to-back three pointers to give the Bobcats a three-point lead.
The Bobcats were able to hit their free-throws down the stretch and the defense caused three turnovers in the final 40 seconds to seal the win and advance to the quarterfinal round.
