LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Grace LaBarge hit the game-winning three with five seconds left to seal the 60-57 victory over the Rider Broncs on Monday night.
Karson Martin had herself a career night as she went off for 20 points. Martin added three assists and two rebounds to her career night in her first conference game.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-5 in the early campaign, while Rider falls to 2-8 to start the 2023-24 season. Quinnipiac won their MAAC opener for the first time since the 2021-22 season where they defeated Rider 64-60 in New Jersey.
It was a defensive start to the game as the teams combined for twelve points halfway through the first quarter. A three from Kassidy Thompson gave the Bobcats a 10-2 advantage before the Broncs battled back to end the first quarter on a 11-5 run.
The second quarter was all Bobcats as they outscored the Broncs 18-6 in the frame. Maria Kealy had a couple layups in the quarter as she helped the Bobcats to a 30-19 lead at the break.
The start of the second half saw teams going back-and-forth. Karson Martin took over and scored 11 points in the quarter. The Bobcats defense stood tall to end the third quarter with a nine-point advantage.
Rider started the final quarter by bringing the game within five, causing the Bobcats to call a timeout with 7:43 to play. The Broncs came out of the timeout hot, tying the game up at 47 with 5:56 remaining. The back-and-fourth play continued and saw the two teams square at 51 with 3:09 left on the clock. With the game tied at 56, Grace LaBarge stepped up and knocked down a huge three pointer to put the Bobcats up 59-56 with five seconds to go.
After Rider hit a free-throw, it was a two point game before Paige Girardi hit one of her two free-throws to push the lead back to three. The Broncs got a three-point look at the horn, but it did not go as the Bobcats took home the 60-57 victory.
