Foley Leads Bobcats Past Maine in Opener

HAMDEN, Conn. – First-year Anna Foley led the way with 21 points in her collegiate debut to lead Quinnipiac women's basketball past America East powerhouse Maine, 70-57, in the 2023-24 opener on Monday evening inside of M&T Bank Arena.
Along with a game-high 21 points, Foley added five rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while captain Jackie Grisdale added 17 points.
With the win, the Bobcats open their campaign at 1-0 for the first time since the 2020-21 season, while Maine fell to 0-1 to start the 2023-24 season.
The Bobcats used the opening 2:40 of the contest to go on a 7-2 run before Maine fought back to take an 8-7 lead into the first media timeout. Out of the break, Maine closed the quarter with an 11-5 run to take a 19-12 lead into the second quarter.
The Bobcats did not go away quietly, going on a 13-6 run to knot the contest at 25-25 behind two three-pointers from Jackie Grisdale and one from Karson Martin for the first points of her collegiate career.
The Bobcats were able to extend the lead to 31-26 behind a swift 6-0 run to force a Maine timeout.
However, Maine closed the half with a 5-2 run to cut QU's lead to 33-31 heading into the break.
The Black Bears outscored the Bobcats 9-7 to open the half, knotting the contest at 40-40 before the Bobcats closed the third quarter with a 14-1 run to take a 54-41 lead into the fourth.
The Bobcats never lost their footing in the fourth, leading by as much as 18 in the frame before holding on for the eventual 70-57 victory in the season-opener.
