Bobcats' Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short vs. Iona

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's basketball was unable to complete a second half comeback, falling short at home against Iona, 47-42, Saturday afternoon inside of M&T Bank Arena.
With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 9-7 overall on the season and 4-3 in the MAAC, while the Gaels improved to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Cur'Tiera Haywood led the way for Quinnipiac with 11 points and six rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth affair between the two sides to open the contest, with Iona carrying a 14-13 lead into the second quarter. Mary Baskerville and Mikala Morris combined to score seven of Quinnipiac's 13 points in the frame.
The Gaels turned up the defensive pressure on the Bobcats in the second quarter, holding Quinnipiac to five points in the frame. Iona tallied 13 points in the period to carry a 27-18 lead into the break.
After Quinnipiac scored the opening bucket of the half 1:04 into the period, the Gaels rattled off a 9-0 run to expand their lead to 16 points, its largest of the game. The Bobcats responded with a 7-0 run of their own to close the third, trimming the deficit to 36-27 entering the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats maintained their momentum into the fourth, using a 6-0 run behind an old-fashioned three-point play from Cur'Tiera Haywood, followed by a Rose Caverly three-pointer to bring Quinnipiac within three with 7:42 left in regulation.
However, Iona scored five of the next seven points to extend its lead 41-35. Down but not out, Haywood responded with a three-pointer from the wing to cut the deficit to 41-38 with 1:16 remaining.
However, the Bobcats couldn't get over the hump and fell short, 47-42.
