HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University assistant director of athletic support, Amy Klopfenstein, along with assistant acrobatics and tumbling coach Camren Diaz attended the "Equal Play: Celebrating 50 Years of Title IX", held at Gillette Stadium on June 9 in Foxborough, Mass.
Hosted by Kraft Sports + Entertainment (KSE) and Kraft Analytics Group (KAGR), Equal Play provided an opportunity to connect and empower an intimate network of advocates for women in sports throughout New England and inspire the next generation of difference makers who are fighting for ongoing equality in sports.
The private event featured a fireside chat with legendary tennis star and innovator, Billie Jean King and was moderated by award-winning sports journalist, author, and TV personality Jackie MacMullan.
"It was an amazing event! Hearing from the pioneer of women's professional sports was so inspiring," Klopfenstein said. "King had a dynamic energy that kept us all captivated and gave so much hope for the next 50 years of women in sports! One of her best pieces of advice was not just to get a seat at the table, as a woman, but also to have a voice when you are there."
Along with the tennis great and renowned NBA reporter, the event recognized a few other women who shaped the landscape for those who followed. Michele Roberts, the former executive director of the NBA, Kristine Lilly, the retired United States women's national soccer team legend, and Kathy Delaney-Smith, the longtime head coach of the Harvard women's basketball program, were among the extraordinary women who, with MacMullan, made up a panel for a Q&A portion of the event.
The anniversary of Title IX will be celebrated on June 23rd, 50 years from the day that it was signed into law as part of the Education Amendments of 1972.
