Team Advances to Second Straight ECAC Championship Game
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey jumped out to a two-goal first period lead in Friday's ECAC Hockey Semifinal matchup and closed out a 3-1 victory over the fifth-seeded Colgate Raiders to advance to Saturday's championship game.
Joey Cipollone opened the scoring with his third power play goal in his last six games as he took a cross-crease feed from Oliver Chau and buried it with 9:23 gone in the first period.
Later in the period, defenseman Brendan Less chipped a puck off the boards in the defensive zone to a streaking TJ Friedmann who entered the Colgate end and fed a driving Michael Lombardi. Lombardi found space in the slot and redirected the puck into the net for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
Colgate scored the only goal in the second period as the Raiders turned a blocked shot into a 2-on-1 and Griffin Lunn scored on the rebound of a Yaniv Perets save on the initial shot.
After nearly ten minutes of a tense final frame, captain Wyatt Bongiovanni entered the zone with pace and fired a lazer beam past Colgate goaltender Mitch Benson to extend the Bobcats lead to 3-1. Ethan de Jong assisted on the goal to earn his 100th career point, becoming the 42nd Quinnipiac player to acheive the milestone.
