Bobcats Sweep ECAC Quarterfinals, Advance to Lake Placid
HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Desi Burgart banked home a backhander at 9:09 of the second overtime period to lift top-seeded Quinnipiac to a dramatic 4-3 victory over St. Lawrence in Game Two of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals on Saturday night. With the win, the Bobcats sweep the series and advance to the ECAC Semifinals in Lake Placid, NY next weekend.
Burgart tracked a rebound of an off-target shot by Griffin Mendel and backhanded it in off the pad of a sprawling Emil Zetterquist for the game winner. The Bobcats trailed 3-1 in the third period before rallying to tie the game with two goals in less than four minutes.
Aleksi Peltonen opened the scoring with a first period tally that sent the Saints to the first intermission with the 1-0 lead. Mendel scored his third goal of the series at 14:37 of the second period to knot things at 1-1 leading into the final frame.
The Saints came out of the locker room hot, scoring twice in the first 3:32 of the third and shocking the People's United Center with a two-goal edge. The Quinnipiac comeback started with a Brendan Less power play goal from the point and was completed when Skyler Brind'Amour deflected a Jayden Lee shot past Zetterquist, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Both teams had numerous chances in both overtimes until Burgart ended it with his clutch tally.
