Field Hockey Falls on Senior Day to Friars in Tough Loss
HAMDEN, Conn. – Providence scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining in regulation Saturday afternoon as the Quinnipiac field hockey team fell to the Friars, 1-0, in BIG EAST action.
After a restart deep in their defensive end, Niamh Gowing carried the ball more than half the field up the right side. She continued into the circle before shoveling a pass to Sophia Pompeo a few yards out from the goal line and she swiped the ball past a charging Nina Santore for the last-second game-winner.
Both teams traded scoring chances throughout the game but neither could break the scoreless stalemate. Asia Porter made two saves for the Friars in her first career win and shutout.
Nina Santore (Berlin, New Jersey) was tested more frequently throughout the game as she made six saves on the seven shots she faced.
