Vorel Ties Career-High with 15 Saves but Field Hockey Falls at UConn, 8-0

STORRS, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team put up a strong defensive effort in the first half but the No. 8 UConn Huskies scored five goals in the third quarter to extend its lead and defeat the Bobcats, 8-0, Sunday afternoon in BIG EAST Field Hockey action.

Sophie Hamilton led the Huskies with six points on two goals and two assists while Jessica Dembrowski matched Hamilton with a two-goal performance. Claire van den Noort led UConn with three assists in the game while four different players added single goals.

Mack Vorel (Mendham, New Jersey) battled in the cage as she tied her career-high with 15 saves against the Huskies in her first start of the season.

Vorel kept Quinnipiac in the game early, stopping nine of the 12 shots she faced in the first two quarters to hold UConn to just a 3-0 lead. The Huskies' three goals in the first half were its fewest in a first half against the Bobcats this season.

UConn outshot Quinnipiac, 23-0, and had a 16-0 edge in penalty corners.

SCORING SUMMARY

6:09 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 1): Hamilton received a long outlet pass and carried the ball nearly 3/4 the length of the field, weaving through the defense before striking a reverse hit past Vorel for the first goal of the game.
13:37 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 2): Hamilton stole the ball from a Bobcat and blew past a defender, turned into the circle before shooting the ball from nearly the penalty dot for her second goal of the quarter.
21:33 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 3): Off a penalty corner, Hamilton had one shot blocked and then one shot saved before the rebound went to Dembrowski near the post and she lifted the ball over a defender into the net.
31:53 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 4): Hamilton restarted play at the 23-meter line and fired the ball on net where it was deflected and saved by Vorel but Claire van den Noort was there to bump the rebound to Vivienne Tucker to her left to tap into the cage.
33:19 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 5): van den Noort inserted a penalty corner that was stopped by Morgan Kaufmann at the top of the circle and Kourtney Kennedy fired the ball into the cage past Vorel
34:57 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 6): The Huskies scored their third goal fo the third quarter as a long pass was made from midfield to van den Noort in the far corner where she passed a centering feed to Dembrowski who tipped the pass home for the goal.
37:49 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 7): UConn picked off a pass from Quinnipiac and the ball was played up to Horan who had her initial shot save but she stayed on the rebound and slammed the ball off the backboard for the team's fourth goal fo the quarter.
43:03 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 8): Claire Jandewerth played a long pass from her right back position that was tipped around a Bobcat defender by van den Noort nearly 40 yards away. Hamilton collected the pass and found Solomen on her left for the goal.

Quinnipiac turns its attention back to the Providence Friars with a home-and-home series this weekend as the Bobcats hit the road Thursday for a 3 p.m. showdown at Lennon Family Field before returning to Hamden on Saturday to host the Friars at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
