HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team opens up a home-and-home series this weekend with the No. 8 UConn Huskies beginning Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. when the Bobcats host the Huskies at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac recorded its first shutout and second win of the season with a 2-0 blanking of the Providence Friars. Jess Halley scored both goals while Nina Santore had eight saves for the Bobcats. The Bobcats have defeated Providence twice this season.
Scouting UConn
UConn enters the weekend with a 5-1 record and 4-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Huskies took down the Bobcats in their last action on March 18, 6-0, behind Sophie Hamilton's first career hat trick and seven-point game. Jessica Dembrowski and Claire Jandwerth are each tied for second with four goals while Dembrowski has the advantage with 10 points. Cheyenne Sprecher and Ana Carney combined for the shutout of the Bobcats Sprecher remains solid in goal with a 5-1-0 record, 1.04 GAA and .700 save percentage.
All-Time vs. UConn
The Bobcats are 0-13 against the Huskies all-time dating back to the first meeting on Oct. 4, 2002. Quinnipiac was blanked by UConn, 6-0, in Hamden last week as the Bobcats remain winless against the Huskies.
Rookie of the Week
Nina Santore was named the BIG EAST Field Hockey Rookie of the Week for the second time in her young career already after her eight-save shutout at Providence. Santore has won the award two of the last three weeks.
Honorable Mention
Jess Halley was added to the BIG EAST Field Hockey Honorable Mention this week after her two goal-performance at Providence. Halley was the first honorable mention selection this season for the Bobcats.
Santore has Candor
Santore had an impressive week for the Bobcats in cage as she made a career-high 11 saves against the Huskies in a tough loss before making eight saves in her first career shutout. Santore has made 35 saves to average seven per game and is tied with Sprecher for fourth in the league with a .700 save percentage.
Happy Halley
Halley recorded her first career two-goal game in the 2-0 win at Providence. Halley had recorded just one goal in her career prior to the win at Providence. She also had Quinnipiac's first two-goal game since Julianna Cappello had two goals in the season finale in 2019.
The Amanda Show
Amanda Funaro has gotten off to an impressive start this season as she recorded her first career point with an assist on Halley's second goal against the Friars. Funaro also recorded a defensive save for the second consecutive game and now has three on the season.
