Field Hockey Battles But Comes Up Short Against Huskies, 6-0
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team hosted the No. 6 UConn Huskies in a rainy matchup Thursday afternoon but the Bobcats fell to the Huskies, 6-0.
 
Amanda Funaro (Nesconset, New York) led a ferocious defensive effort as she came away with two defensive saves on penalty corners for the Bobcats while first year goalkeeper Nina Santore (Berlin, New Jersey) made a career-high 11 saves.
 
Sophie Hamilton led UConn with seven points on the strength of a hat trick and an assist. Claire Jandewerth added a goal and an assist for the Huskies while Aiyi Young had two assists. Anna Horan and Erica Solomen also scored for UConn.
 
The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter as Jandewerth scored on a penalty corner with just over five minutes left in the quarter and Hamilton dribbled around the defense with 1:32 left in the frame to double the lead.
 
UConn added two more in the second quarter as Horan redirected a pass from Jandewerth before Young passed the ball from the middle of the field down to Solomen who turned and struck it past a diving Santore.
 
Hamilton added two goes in the second half, including a penalty stroke goal in the fourth quarter, to finish off her first career hat trick.

- 47:40 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 6): Hamilton completed the hat trick with a penalty stroke as she buried the shot in the upper left corner.
NOTES
- Funaro recorded the first two defensive saves of her career Thursday as she made couple of key stops on penalty corners on shots that would have beat Santore.
- Funaro is the first Bobcat with two defensive saves in a game since Ines Ruiz Martinez '20 had three defensive saves at Temple in a 5-2 win on Oct. 26, 2018.
- Quinnipiac recorded two defensive saves in a game for the first time as a team since Oct. 28, 2018 at Holy Cross.
- Santore made a career-high 11 saves for the Bobcats and now has 27 saves through the first four games.
- She has made the third-most saves in the BIG EAST while her 6.75 saves per game are the most in the league.
