Field Hockey Battles But Comes Up Short Against Huskies, 6-0

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team hosted the No. 6 UConn Huskies in a rainy matchup Thursday afternoon but the Bobcats fell to the Huskies, 6-0.

Amanda Funaro (Nesconset, New York) led a ferocious defensive effort as she came away with two defensive saves on penalty corners for the Bobcats while first year goalkeeper Nina Santore (Berlin, New Jersey) made a career-high 11 saves.

Sophie Hamilton led UConn with seven points on the strength of a hat trick and an assist. Claire Jandewerth added a goal and an assist for the Huskies while Aiyi Young had two assists. Anna Horan and Erica Solomen also scored for UConn.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter as Jandewerth scored on a penalty corner with just over five minutes left in the quarter and Hamilton dribbled around the defense with 1:32 left in the frame to double the lead.

UConn added two more in the second quarter as Horan redirected a pass from Jandewerth before Young passed the ball from the middle of the field down to Solomen who turned and struck it past a diving Santore.

Hamilton added two goes in the second half, including a penalty stroke goal in the fourth quarter, to finish off her first career hat trick.

SCORING SUMMARY

9:55 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 1): Jandewerth got the first goal of the game for the Huskies as she fired home a goal off a penalty corner that was inserted by Young and stopped by Hamilton at the top of the circle.
13:28 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 2): Hamilton scored off a restart as she carried the ball to the right of the circle from the 23-meter line and tucked a reverse hit inside the near post.
19:00 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 3): Horan buried her first career goal as Jandewerth fired a shot on goal off a penalty corner that Horan tipped into the net to take a 3-0 lead.
26:17 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 4): Solomen got a goal of her own with a few minutes left in the second quarter as Young passed the ball from the center of the field to the top of the circle and Solomen turned and fired the ball to the low left corner.
33:41 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 5): Hamilton scored another unassisted goal early in the third quarter as she restarted the play outside the circle and dribbled through the Quinnipiac defense before sliding the ball past Santore for the goal.
47:40 (Quinnipiac 0, UConn 6): Hamilton completed the hat trick with a penalty stroke as she buried the shot in the upper left corner.

NOTES

Funaro recorded the first two defensive saves of her career Thursday as she made couple of key stops on penalty corners on shots that would have beat Santore.
Funaro is the first Bobcat with two defensive saves in a game since Ines Ruiz Martinez '20 had three defensive saves at Temple in a 5-2 win on Oct. 26, 2018.
Quinnipiac recorded two defensive saves in a game for the first time as a team since Oct. 28, 2018 at Holy Cross.
Santore made a career-high 11 saves for the Bobcats and now has 27 saves through the first four games.
She has made the third-most saves in the BIG EAST while her 6.75 saves per game are the most in the league.

Quinnipiac hits the road Sunday as the Bobcats will travel to Providence, R.I., to take on the Friars with game time set for 12 p.m. at Lennon Family Field.
