HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team has a pair of games lined for this weekend as the Bobcats host the No. 6 UConn Huskies Thursday afternoon before traveling to Providence to face the Friars on Sunday at Noon.
 
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac struggled in its weekend trip to Philadelphia as the Bobcats dropped a pair of games with the Villanova Wildcats. Quinnipiac battled in the first game, coming up just short with a 3-2 loss before falling in the final game of the weekend, 5-0.
 
Scouting UConn
UConn enters the weekend with a 4-1 record and 3-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Huskies had won four straight games to open the season, including back-to-back wins against Providence before taking down Liberty in Philadelphia on Saturday, 3-2. UConn fell to the Flames, 4-0, in Sunday's matchup. Sophie Hamilton leads UConn with five goals, four assists and 14 points while Jessica Dembrowski is second on the team with four goals, two assists and 10 points. Cheyenne Sprecher is back between the pipes, owning a 1.20 GAA and .684 save percentage with 13 saves as well as three shutouts.
 
All-Time vs. UConn
The Bobcats are 0-12 against the Huskies all-time dating back to the first meeting on Oct. 4, 2002. Quinnipiac was blanked by UConn, 5-0, in Hamden last season after two-goal games from Sophie Hamilton and Svea Boker.
 
Scouting Providence
Providence is 0-3 this season after two losses to UConn and one to Quinnipiac back on March 5. Last weekend's matchups with Old Dominion were postponed. The Friars have scored just one goal, a Niamh Gowing tally, in the 2-1 loss at the Bobcats. UConn defeated Providence by scores of 4-0 and 3-0. Camryn Kelbaugh has a 3.00 GAA and .571 save percentage for the Friars.
 
All-Time vs. Providence
The Bobcats are 1-6 against the Friars after defeating Providence in the season opener, 2-1, behind Julianna Cappello's game-winning goal with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter. Quinnipiac's win was its first against Providence in their seven meetings. Five of the seven games between the Bobcats and Friars have been decided by one goal.
 
Hopeful Howard
Olivia Howard scored her second goal of the season as she staked the Bobcats out to a 1-0 lead against the Wildcats. Howard scored goals in back-to-back games to open the season, and leads the team with five points and is tied for the team lead with two goals.
 
Jewels by Jules
Julianna Cappello extended her goal-scoring streak Saturday to four games with her tally in the first game against Villanova. She had goals in the final games of the 2019 season before scoring in two straight to open the 2020-21 campaign.
 
Jessie's World
Jess Halley recorded an assist on Howard's goal once again, giving her points in back-to-back games to open the season. She picked up points in back-to-back games for just the second time in her career and now has two assists in each of her first three seasons.
 
Whiplash
Brooke Whipkey tallied her first point of the season with an assist on Howard's goal. Whipkey's last assist before Saturday came on the final goal of the 2019 season, Cappello's double overtime winner against Temple on Nov. 1, 2019.
 
Just Josey
Josie Sweeney recorded the first point of her collegiate career Saturday as she picked up an assist on Howard's goal in the final minute as the Bobcats attempted to come back from a two-goal deficit. Sweeney has played in all three games, and made her first career start on Sunday.
 
Santeria
Nina Santore has made three straight starts in goal to kick off her collegiate career for the Bobcats. She made a career-high seven saves Saturday at Villanova and now has 16 saves in three games to open the season.
