HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team is back on the road this weekend for just its second full road weekend of the season as the Bobcats head to Central New York to take on the Colgate Raiders at Class of 1965 Arena in a pair of games Friday and Saturday.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac completed a weekend sweep of the St. Lawrence Saints last time out with a 4-1 win last Friday and a 2-1 win Saturday over the Saints for their fifth sweep of the season. Ethan de Jong and Matthew Fawcett led the Bobcats with two goals each on the weekend and Keith Petruzzelli was stellar between the pipes.
Scouting Colgate
The Raiders enter the weekend on a three-game unbeaten streak after a win and a tie against Clarkson on Feb. 4 and 6. Colgate is 3-1-1 since getting swept by Quinnipiac on Jan 15 and 17. Overall, the Raiders enter the weekend with a 5-6-4 record with a 4-5-3 mark in ECAC Hockey play. Colgate is led offensively by first year Alex Young, posting five goals and seven assists for 12 points in the 15 games. Griffin Lunn is tied for the team lead with seven assists and is second with nine points while Matt Verboon is second with four goals. Carter Gylander has taken the reigns on the starting goaltender job, posting a 2.07 GAA and .919 save percentage along with a 5-4-3 record.
All-Time vs. Colgate
The Bobcats enter the weekend with a 26-17-2 record all-time against the Raiders in 45 all-time meetings dating back to the 2005-06 season when the Bobcats joined ECAC Hockey. Quinnipiac has won three-straight games against Colgate and is 12-3-0 in the last 15 games since the start of the 2014-15 season.
ECAC Hockey Standings
Quinnipiac enters the weekend with a four-point edge in the ECAC Hockey standings over Clarkson, 23 points to 19, and is the only team with a conference record above .500 at 6-3-3. Colgate is tied with St. Lawrence with 15 points.
National Rankings
The Bobcats are back up to No. 11 in the nation in both national polls after sweeping the Saints. Quinnipiac has remained ranked in the USCHO Poll for the entire 2020-21 season.
Weekly Awards
Quinnipiac earned a pair of weekly honors once again this week as Ethan de Jong was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week while Keith Petruzzelli was the goaltender of the week. de Jong's player of the week honor was the first of his career while Petruzzelli earned the fifth goaltender of the week award of his career, and second of the season.
Hobey Baker Award Nominees
Odeen Tufto and Keith Petruzzelli were each nominated for the 2021 Hobey Baker Award this weekend, with Tufto earning his second straight nomination. Both Tufto and Petruzzelli rank among the nation's leaders statistically. Tufto has garnered 1.6 percent of the fan vote so far.
Mike Richter Award Watch List
Petruzzelli was also named to the 2021 Mike Richter Award "Watch List," an award which is presented to the nation's top goaltender. He is among the nation's leaders with four shutouts and 12 wins, and also owns a 1.71 GAA and .932 save percentage.
Rising in the Record Books
Odeen Tufto continues to see his name quickly climb up the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey record books as he recorded another assist this past weekend against St. Lawrence. Tufto ranks third in program history with 115 assists. He trails only Bryan Leitch '09 with 116 assists and Reid Cashman '07 with 125 in their careers.
Tufto also picked up the 150th point of his Quinnipiac career to become the eighth player in program history, and third in Division I program history, with 150 points. Next on the list is Rick Ciardiello '87 with 158 assists for seventh and then Leitch and Brian Herbert '03 who are tied for first in Division I program history and fifth in overall history with 169 points.
Tuff as Nails
Tufto continues to lead the nation with 25 assists on the season after recording a helper against St. Lawrence. He also ranks second in the nation with 29 points, trailing only Wisconsin sophomore Cole Caufield who has 33 points. Tufto also ranks fifth in the nation among centers with a .613 faceoff percentage.
Petro Station
Petruzzelli has steadily climbed the ranks of goaltenders this season as he is second in the nation with 12 wins and four shutouts while his 1.71 GAA is fifth and his .932 save percentage is just outside the Top 10 in 11th. Petruzzelli has allowed one goal or fewer in seven of his last eight starts, and 10 of his 20 games this season.
de Jong and the Restless
de Jong tied for the league lead with two goals and three points this past weekend. He led ECAC Hockey with an impressive 11 shots on goal. He now has a four-game point streak and has goals in back-to-back games. de Jong's 10 goals this season are tied for his career-high from 2018-19, while his 18 points are already equal to his sophomore season total in 2019-20.
Legend of Lombo
Michael Lombardi tied de Jong for the league lead with three points last weekend after posting a goal and an assist. He scored in both games to give him points in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Lombardi now has a career-high six assists and is one point shy of tying his career-high nine points from 2018-19.
Leaky Fawcett
Matthew Fawcett recorded the first multi-goal game of his career last Friday night as he buried two goals in the winning effort for the Bobcats. Fawcett previously recorded his first two-point game in the season-opener against Sacred Heart. He now has three goals and four points this season.
Burgart King
Desi Burgart picked up assists in back-to-back games last weekend as he found the scoresheet for the first time since Jan. 15. He is just one assist shy of tying his career-high of five assists from his rookie season in 2018-19 while his 12 points are sixth on the team.
Brita Filter
Logan Britt had a game to remember as he tallied his first two-point game with a pair of assists against St. Lawrence last Friday night. Britt has stepped up his offensive production in 2020-21 with career-highs two goals, three assists and five points.
Filling It Up
Christophe Fillion tallied his second goal of the season Saturday to snap a four-game stretch without a point. Fillion now has two goals since joining the team this season. Fillion is one of 15 Bobcats with at least five points on the team.
Sky's the Limit
Skyler Brind'Amour notched his fifth assist of the season with a helper on de Jong's game-winning goal Saturday against St. Lawrence. His point was the 20th of his career as he enters the weekend with seven this season on two goals and five assists.
Rasing the Bar
Iivari Räsänen picked up an assist as he set up Lombardi's goal on Friday night for his second point of the season. Räsänen now has a pair of assists after recording his first career point on Jan. 17 against Colgate.
Leyhing it All on the Line
Ethan Leyh also recorded an assist on Lombardi's goal against the Saints for his sixth assist of the season as he moved into a tie for sixth on the team in assists. Leyh has seven points on the season, and is within three points of his rookie season total of 10.
