Caverly Scores 16 to Lead Bobcats in Opener
BRONX, N.Y. – Senior Rose Caverly scored a team-best 16 points as the Quinnipiac women's basketball team dropped in its 2021-22 opener against Fordham, 79-71, in overtime on Tuesday evening inside of Rose Hill Gym.
Junior forward Mikala Morris added 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while senior guard Mackenzie DeWees contributed 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

- With the Bobcats trailing 7-6 with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter, the Rams went on a 10-4 run to take a 17-10 lead with less than a minute to go in the opening period
- Makenzie Helms drilled a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in the quarter to trim the Quinnipiac deficit to four heading into the second quarter
- After falling behind 24-19 nearly midway through the second, the Bobcats used the final 5:10 of the half to go on 16-6 run to take a 35-30 lead into the break
- Amani Free and Mackenzie DeWees combined to score 11 of Quinnipiac's 16 points on the run
- Quinnipiac pushed ahead by as much as seven points at the 8:50 mark in the third quarter before Fordham countered with a 9-0 run to force a Bobcats' timeout, trailing 41-39
- Out of the timeout the Rams used the final 4:18 of the stanza to outscore the Bobcats 12-5, carrying a 53-45 lead into the fourth
- Behind a mid-range jumper from DeWees and a three-pointer from Rose Caverly, Quinnipiac was able to cut the deficit to three before Fordham responded with five straight points of its own to go up eight with 6:05 remaining in regulation
- Trailing by eight, Quinnipiac was able to outscore Fordham 15-7 over the final six minutes of play, capped by a Caverly three with two seconds remaining to force OT

- The Rams outscored the Bobcats 8-3 over the first four minutes of overtime
- The deficit proved to be too much to overcome, as Quinnipiac eventually fell, 79-71
- First year Reiven Douglas made her collegiate debut in the contest, while Helms made her first appearance as a Bobcat after transferring from Nebraska
- Helms tallied 10 points and three assists in her debut
- Free added 10 points off the bench
- Marked the first time the Bobcats had five players in reach double-figures in scoring since they did it against Saint Peter's on Jan. 10, 2021
- The Bobcats shot 69.2 percent from the floor in the second quarter, making nine of 13 field goal attempts
- Quinnipiac went a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the second quarter
- Caverly went 4-for-5 from downtown
- The Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday. Nov. 13, when they travel to take on in-state foe Central Connecticut
- Tip-off from Detrick Gymnasium is set for 1 p.m.
