de Jong Nets Hat Trick in Victory
HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Ethan de Jong recorded his first career hat trick and first year goaltender Yaniv Perets made 23 saves in Quinnipiac's commanding 8-0 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday night at the People's United Center.
Joey Cipollone opened the scoring at 5:36 after taking a back door feed from first year Jacob Quillan. Senior TJ Friedmann recorded one of his two assists on the opening goal.
de Jong scored his first of three just three minutes later when he popped out to the high slot and buried a one-timer on the power play. Ty Smilanic and Zach Metsa earned helpers on the goal, with Metsa regaining the team lead with 14 points on the year.
Four minutes into the second period, Quinnipiac struck for two quick tallies when Oliver Chau and de Jong scored goals 25 seconds apart.
Later in the period, the Bobcats put together a flurry of three more goals in less than three minutes, including two by Smilanic. On his second goal, the sophomore was slashed on a breakaway and proceeded to convert the penalty shot to cap off a five-goal second period for QU.
Senior captain Wyatt Bongiovanni picked up his sixth goal of the season in the third period, converting a stellar feed from Chau on a shorthanded opportunity.
