Perets Shuts Down Clarkson in Shootout, Bobcats Earn Extra Point in Tie
HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior captain Wyatt Bongiovanni scored the only goal in the shootout and first-year goaltender Yaniv Perets made all three saves as the #5/5 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Clarkson at the People's United Center on Friday night.
Perets made a massive save on a Clarkson breakaway with two seconds left in overtime to preserve the tie and force the shootout.
Clarkson scored an early power play to take a 1-0 lead in the game's first five minutes and then doubled the lead less than 90 seconds into the second period.
Graduate student defenseman Griffin Mendel scored his first goal of the season to cut the Clarkson lead in half less than five minutes after Clarkson's second goal. Fellow d-man Marcus Chorney and senior Ethan de Jong earned assists on the goal.
Quinnipiac dominated possession in the third period and was ultimately rewarded at the 7:30 mark when redshirt junior Guus van Nes walked out from behind the net and buried a backhand shot to tie the game.
After a scoreless overtime period, Bongiovanni's shootout goal was the difference to give the Bobcats the extra point in the ECAC Hockey standings.
