Bobcats Take Down Nation's Top Team for Second Straight Season with Win Over Big Red
HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 18 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team dominated from start to finish Friday night as the Bobcats blanked the No. 1 Cornell Big Red, 5-0, in front of a sellout crowd.
Quinnipiac's victory over Cornell is its second against the top-ranked team in the nation in as many seasons after taking down then-No. 1 UMass in December 2018.
The Bobcats scored three goals in a span of 2:36 and never looked back to earn their ninth win in the last 11 games. Quinnipiac's 5-0 win is its largest win against Cornell since a 10-0 win in Game Two of the 2013 ECAC Quarterfinals.
Prior to Quinnipiac's first period onslaught, Cornell had allowed three goals in a game just once the entire season and had no trailed by more than a goal.
Nick Jermain (Norwalk, Connecticut) had a game to remember as he scored a pair of goals and added an assist for his third career three-point game. Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) scored a goal in the second period and added an assist and TJ Friedmann (St. Louis, Missouri) added his first goal of the season to cap off the scoring early in the third period.
Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) stood on his head and kept the Big Red at bay as he made 22 saves in his second shutout of the season and fifth of his career. His best period came in the third as he made two highlight reel saves as part of an eight save period.

- (8:53, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 1, Cornell 0: Jermain got the Bobcats on the board with his first of the night as he raced down the ice with Whelan on a two-on-one and lifted the pass from Whelan past Galajda as he fell to the ice.
- (9:45, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 2, Cornell 0: Metsa doubled the Bobcats lead less than a minute later as he rifled home a shot from the left point to beat Galajda and take a 2-0 lead.
- (11:29, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 3, Cornell 0: Jermain capped off the Bobcats stretch of three goals in fewer than three minutes as he cleaned up a rebound off an Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) for his second of the night.
- (12:33, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 4, Cornell 0: Whelan got a goal of his own just over midway through the second period as he wristed home a rocket off a rebound on a William Fällström (Stockholm, Sweden) shot to make it 4-0, Bobcats.
- (2:37, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 5, Cornell 0: Friedmann finished off the scoring for the Bobcats early in the third period as he skated the puck in on a breakaway before wristing home his first of the season for the Bobcats fifth unanswered goal.

NOTES
- Quinnipiac defeated a No. 1 nationally-ranked team for the second straight season with Friday night's win over No. 1 Cornell.
- Last season, the Bobcats knocked off then-No. 1 UMass at home, 4-0, in another impressive shutout.
- Jermain tied career-highs with two goals and three points as he had one of the best games of his career.
- Jermain's two-goal game was the fourth of his career while his three-point night was his third.
- He now has points in five consecutive games for the Bobcats while his 15 points sets a new career-high and he reached the 10-goal mark for the first time in his career.
- Whelan chipped in a goal and an assist in the winning effort for his ninth goal of the season and now has 15 points.
- His two-point night was his third multi-point game of the season
- Petruzzelli was spectacular between the pipes as he recorded his second shutout of the season and fifth of his career
- He tallied 22 saves on the night, including nine in the first period and eight in the third period
- Petruzzelli's win was also his 15th of the season to move passed Galajda for the second-most in ECAC Hockey this season
- Metsa scored his fourth goal of the season with his rocket in the first period for his first goal since Jan. 10 at St. Lawrence.
- Friedmann found the back of the net for the first time this season as he capped off the Bobcats scoring with his goal early in the third period.
- Tufto continued his point prowess with his 24th assist of the season to maintain his ECAC Hockey lead and is tied for third with 27 points.
- Fällström extended his point streak to four games and now has points in seven of his last nine games
- With his assist Friday night, Fällström now has 13 assists to tie his total from 2018-19 as a first year.
- Peter DiLiberatore (Bedford, Nova Scotia) got back on the scoresheet with his 15th point of the season as he tallied an assist on Metsa's goal to make him the first Bobcat defenseman with 15 points this year.
- Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up his 14th points of the season on his ninth assist as he fed Metsa the puck for his goal in the first period.
- CJ McGee (Pearl River, New York) recorded his second career assist and first since Nov. 30 with the secondary helper on Jermain's second goal of the night.
- Jayden Lee (North Vancouver, British Columbia) had the primary helper with a great seam pass to Friedmann for the Bobcats' final goal of the night, his third career assist
- Ethan Leyh (Anmore, British Columbia) also assisted Friedmann's goal to pick up his second helper of the season and seventh point.
- Quinnipiac men's ice hockey continues the weekend Saturday night as the Bobcats host the Colgate Raiders at 7 p.m.
