HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Eamon Whelan scored the game-winning goal in the 89^th minute of play, lifting Quinnipiac men's soccer past Sacred Heart by the final score of 2-0 at the QU Soccer Stadium in Hamden.

With the win, the Bobcats move to 1-1-1 so far in 2019. Whelan and Oriac Vila Rotxes accounted for the two Quinnipiac goals, and junior goalkeeper Jared Mazzola made five saves in the win.

SCORING SUMMARY

(9' – Quinnipiac 1, Sacred Heart 0): Oriac Vila Rotxes scored his first goal of the season less than 10 minutes into action, giving the Bobcats the early lead. Eamon Whelan played the ball ahead to Vila, who cut in front of a Pioneers' defender and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper to give the Bobcats the lead.
(10' – Quinnipiac 1, Sacred Heart 1): Segundo Navarro tied the game just 1:32 later, tracking down a Quinnipiac pass, then blasting one into the back of the net from the top of the box.
(89' – Quinnipiac 2, Sacred Heart 1): Eamon Whelan scored the game-winner with less than two minutes left. Evan Hughes played a ball toward goal, then Whelan collected the loose ball and tapped it past the Pioneers keeper to lift the Bobcats to the win.

NOTES

Vila Rotxes' goal is the third of his career with the Bobcats. He scored twice last season as a freshman, once against Albany (9/15) and once vs. Niagara (10/24).
Whelan now has 28 career goals over his four seasons at Quinnipiac, needing four more goals to move into sole possession of the No. 3 spot in Quinnipiac's all-time ranks.
Mazzola now has 12 saves over his first three games of 2019.
The assist on the game-winning goal is Hughes' first of the season. The senior had three helpers last year for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac recorded 24 shots, the most the program has attempted in a game since 2017. The Bobcats attempted 25 shots on Oct. 21, 2017 vs. Marist.
The Bobcats attempted 11 corners to Sacred Heart's three.
Head Coach Eric Da Costa now has 108 total wins over 15 seasons at Quinnipiac.
