HAMDEN, Conn. – After an 11-day hiatus, the Quinnipiac field hockey team is back in game action with two games in three days as the Bobcats host Sacred Heart in the home opener on Saturday before taking a trip down to Long Island to take on Hofstra in a Monday matinee.
Scouting Sacred Heart
The Pioneers come into the weekend with a 1-4 record to start the season with their lone win coming in double overtime against Saint Francis at home on Johnson Field in New Haven. Sacred Heart will face Holy Cross Friday night at 6 p.m. before taking on the Bobcats Saturday afternoon. Seven different Pioneers have all scored one goal this season while Kayla Kruk leads the team with four points behind a goal and two assists. The Pioneers have struggled defensively, allowing 16 goals in five games with Hailey Power leading the way with a 3.81 GAA and .781 save percentage. She has tallied 50 saves, averaging 10 per game as she's made all five starts.
All-Time vs. Sacred Heart
The Bobcats come into Saturday with a 20-11 record all-time against the Pioneers and are winners in eight straight against Sacred Heart, a streak that began with a 5-0 win during the 2009 season. Quinnipiac took last season's matchup, 2-0, in their first meeting since the 2015 season, the Bobcats' final in the MAAC before joining the BIG EAST.
Scouting Hofstra
Hofstra will be well rested after five days off before Monday's meeting as they are coming off a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart for their first of the season. The Pride lost four straight to open the year, outscored 19-1 by their opponents in those four losses before netting three against the Pioneers. Four different Hofstra players have tallied goals and Cami Larsson leads the way with three points on a goal and an assist. The Pride have split the goaltending duties through five games but Merlijn van der Vegt has led the team with a 2.67 GAA, .750 save percentage and 24 saves in her three starts.
All-Time vs. Hofstra
Quinnipiac is 3-13 all-time against Hofstra dating back to the first-ever meeting between the two teams in 1998, the Bobcats' first season of Division I action. Hofstra won the last meeting between the two teams, 4-2, on Long Island in 2017 with Quinnipiac's last win against the Pride coming in 2014, a 4-2 win at home.
25 Years of Field Hockey
As part of Quinnipiac's home opener festivities, the Bobcats will pay tribute to the 25th season of Quinnipiac Field Hockey. Head coach Becca Main has served as the head coach for all 25 seasons of the program with the first game coming at Merrimack on Sept. 12, 1994, and the first win on Oct. 26, 1994. Quinnipiac has had 89 all-conference student-athletes, 23 NFHCA Mideast All-region selections and have reached the NCAA Tournament three times.
The Quest for 200
Main has led the Bobcats to 196 victories over her 24 seasons leading up to 2019 and is just four away from picking up the 200th victory of her career. All but 15 of Main's victories have come at the Division I level and she has amassed 111 of those wins in conference play. Main is looking to become the 20th active NCAA Division I Field Hockey coach to record 200 wins and the 41st all-time.
Halley's Comet
Jess Halley (Glasgow, Scotland) recorded her first career goal in style as she put home a loose ball off a penalty corner at No. 21 Stanford in the Bobcats' last outing on Sept. 3. Halley has played in and started all 20 games through her first two seasons with the program, and picked up her first goal after a pair of assists as a freshman in 2018.
Olivia, Oh My!
Olivia Howard (Clifton Park, New York) got her career started on a high note as she scored her first career goal on her first shot in the season-opener at California on August 30. Howard redirected a shot from Bianka Strubbe off a penalty corner. She was the first freshman Bobcat to score in the season opener since Danielle Allan '15 scored two goals in her collegiate debut on August 26, 2011 at Holy Cross.
Happy Hedda
Hedda Biermann-Ratjen (Hamburg, Germany) has seen time in two games so far, totaling eight saves with a 2.11 GAA and .800 save percentage. She has allowed just two goals. In her last outing, Biermann-Ratjen played the majority of the game at No. 21 Stanford, totaling six saves in the second half.
Very Vorel
Mack Vorel (Mendham, New Jersey) has also shined in cage for the Bobcats as she has started all three games and made 24 saves in 123:15 to go with a .750 save percentage. Vorel made 15 saves in her collegiate debut at California, the most by a Bobcat goalkeeper in a game since Megan Conaboy '15 made 22 saves on Sept. 7, 2014 vs. Penn State. Vorel's 24 saves through her first three games are the Livy Golini made 25 as a freshman in 2016.
Blistering Bianka
Bianka Strubbe recorded her first point of the season with an assist at California in the season opener to extend her point streak, at the time, to four games dating back to the 2018 season. She had closed the year with points in three straight games and picked up 2018 where she left off. Strubbe now has 10 career points in 19 games dating back to last season.
