Klein Promoted to Associate Head Coach, Fleming Returns as Assistant and Way Joins as Volunteer
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac field hockey coach Becca Main has announced several changes to the Bobcats coaching staff for the 2019 season, effective immediately.
After a successful first season with the program, Nina Klein has been promoted to associate head coach while Main welcomes Montana Fleming back to the program as an assistant coach and Emma Way as a volunteer assistant coach.
"We have some big and sensational changes coming to our staff and our new hires compliment the team's overall strategic plan," Main said. "We are looking for increased offensive output and a more competitive tactical focus.
"Our Bobcat team is going to be very lucky to learn and work with very passionate field hockey coaches to achieve the team goals."
During Klein's first season as an assistant coach, the Bobca
ts posted a record of 7-10 and won its most games since joining the BIG EAST. Klein worked on the defensive side of the ball and with the goaltenders, with the team allowing two goals or fewer in eight games last season.
"Nina has grown a tremendous amount in her time with us and the promotion to associate head coach is warranted," Main said. "She will continue to enhance the team's overall competitive focus."
Klein recently has been involved with USA Field Hockey where she competed at the Young Women's National Championship and earned a second invite to USA Field Hockey's Women's National Development Team Selection Camp in December.
"I am very proud of the accomplishments and strides that this program has made under head coach Becca Main's leadership," Klein said. "We continue to recruit, develop, coach, and mentor fantastic young women who achieve success on the pitch, in the classroom, and in our community. I am extremely honored and grateful that Coach Main has given me a new opportunity for growth and leadership as the associate head coach.
"I look forward to putting in the hard work with our coaching staff and our student-athletes to remain competitive in the Big East Conference and on the National stage."
Prior to joining the Quinnipiac coaching staff, Klein was a three-time national champion with the UConn Field Hockey team and completed a perfect season for the Huskies in 2017 en route to her third championship. In her career with the Huskies, Klein was a First Team All-American in 2017, three-time All-BIG EAST selection, three-time All-Mideast Region selection, 2017 NFHCA Scholar of Distinction and the 2017 Division I National Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Klein concluded her collegiate career with a record of 87-6 for the Huskies, including her perfect season in 2017. She had a 1.17 GAA throughout her career with a .730 save percentage along with 36 shutouts. She concluded her career with the second-most wins in NCAA history, second-most minutes played (6,642), tied for the 11th most shutouts and is one of four different goalies to record a perfect season in her career.
Fleming returns to Quinnipiac after spending the 2018 se
ason as an assistant coach at fellow BIG EAST institution Temple, where the Owls went 2-16 in her only season with the program before joining the Bobcats.
"Montana knows the Big East incredibly well with playing stints at UConn and Quinnipiac as well as a year of coaching at Temple," Main said. "She will take over the attacking side of the ball, including building attack initiatives to empower our forwards."
Fleming spent the 2017 season as a fifth-year player for the Bobcats where she started all 18 games as a forward and midfielder. She logged 1,086 minutes, good for the fifth most on the team, and was tied for third on the team with three assists. Following the season, Fleming spent the spring as a graduate assistant coach before completing her master's degree.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to continue my collegiate coaching career at Quinnipiac University," Fleming said. "I am beyond excited to begin working alongside my former coach and mentor, Becca Main, and Nina Klein. This role will afford me the opportunity to evolve as a coach and I look forward to utilizing my tactical knowledge and experiences to elevate our Bobcats in the Big East Conference.
"Thank you to Becca Main and the Quinnipiac field hockey family, I can't wait to be back at Quinnipiac and begin working towards our program goals."
Prior to Quinnipiac, Fleming was a four-year letterwinner for the UConn Huskies and a two-time national champion in 2013 and 2014. While with the Huskies, Fleming was also a four-time BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Champion, and was a two-time All-BIG EAST Academic Team Selection.
She played in 65 games throughout her four seasons at UConn and made 22 starts, totaling eight goals and three assists for 19 points. As a freshman, Fleming recorded a career-high four goals before finishing her Husky career in 2016 with three goals and two assists.
Way joins the Bobcats as a volunteer assistant coach after an illustrious four-ye
ar career at Michigan where she was the 2018 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and was selected to the NFHCA All-America First Team. She also earned NFHCA All-Great Lakes Region First Team honors and was an All-Big Ten First Team selection.
"Emma just completed an impressive playing career with the Wolverines and was highly decorated for her accomplishments over the past two seasons," Main said. "Her contributions to our program will be primarily on the field with the attacking players and specialty situations."

"Coming from an established Big Ten program, I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with the players and being part of a truly collaborative coaching staff as we continue to build the Quinnipiac program under Becca's leadership."
In 2017, Way started 23 of the Wolverines 24 games and was an NFHCA All-West Region Second Team selection as Michigan reached the NCAA National Semifinals. She was second on the team with 36 points on 13 goals and 10 assists.
