HAMDEN, Conn. – Baseball season is finally upon us as the Quinnipiac baseball team begins its 18-game road swing to open the 2019 season this weekend with a three-game series at UNC Greensboro from Friday through Sunday.
Scouting UNC Greensboro
The Spartans come into the season picked to finish second in the Southern Conference just one season after winning the conference's regular season championship. UNC Greensboro finished the season with a 39-15 record and were an impressive 18-3 in SoCon play. The Spartans recorded 35 wins for a third straight season for the first time in program history. Infielder Caleb Webster was named the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year and Preseason First Team All-SoCon while Austin Embler was also named to the Preseason All-SoCon team. Webster was second on the team last season with a .380 batting average and scored 51 runs with 37 RBIs while Embler batted .357 from the lead-off spot with 81 hits and 15 doubles.
All-Time vs. the Spartans
This weekend marks the first-ever series between Quinnipiac and UNC Greensboro.
Preseason Player of the Year
Senior outfielder Liam Scafariello was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year for the first time in his career. Scafariello has his sights set on becoming Quinnipiac's first Player of the Year since Tim Binkoski '07 was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Year in 2007. Last season, Scafariello hit 15 home runs with 45 RBIs, 12 doubles, 42 runs scored, 31 walks and .512 slugging percentage.
Preseason All-MAAC
In addition to the Scafariello's selection as Preseason Player of the Year and to the Preseason All-MAAC Team, three other Bobcats received Preseason All-MAAC Selections. Senior outfielder Brian Moskey was named Preseason All-MAAC for the outfield while junior Evan Vulgamore at third base and sophomore Colton Bender was named at catcher.
Preseason Polls
Despite finishing tied for second in the MAAC in 2018 and reaching the semifinals, the Bobcats were picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches' poll. The Bobcats were picked behind co-preseason favorites Canisius and Monmouth, and Marist in third place.
Oh Captains, My Captains
Head coach John Delaney announced his captains for the 2019 season as he tabbed Anthony Cruz, Brian Moskey and Tyler Poulin with the leadership duties. All three are in their final seasons with the Bobcats and look to lead the team to its first MAAC Championship in school history.
Poulin's Power
Tyler Poulin returns to the mound for the Bobcats as the No. 1 starter just one season after setting the Division I single-season program record with 86 strikeouts in 2018. Poulin is one of just two pitchers in Division I program history to record more than 80 strikeouts while his total was the fifth-most all-time in program history.
On the Verge of History
Liam Scafariello is on precipice of some impressive program records as he comes into the season tied with Ben Gibson '18 for the Division I program record for career home runs with 31, and his next home run will give him the lone mark. Scafariello also sits just nine home runs away from breaking the all-time program record of 39 set by Joe Zangari '00.
Team Records
As a team, the Bobcats had an impressive season all around as the team set program records offensively with 327 runs scored and 534 total hits. In addition to the offensive records, the Bobcats also set the program record for most strikeouts by a pitching staff with 365 in 2018.
Moskey's Money
Brian Moskey is coming off his best season to date in a Quinnipiac uniform as the senior outfielder batted .312 as he started 54 games. He finished second on the team with 13 doubles while leading the team with 67 total hits. Moskey also added 33 RBIs and scored 39 runs, the third-most on the team.
Marrero's Magic
Andre Marrero is coming off a season in which he recorded 17 doubles, tied for the third-most in a season in Division I program history and just two behind Tim Binkoski who set the record in 2005 with 19. Marrero batted .265 on the season and scored 38 runs after drawing 30 walks and stealing 10 bases.
Vulgamore's Very Good
Evan Vulgamore finished third on the team with a .298 batting average as he recorded 21 extra-base hits of his 62 total hits. Vulgamore had 10 home runs and 40 RBIs while scoring 35 runs.
Power Surge
The Bobcats clubbed 58 home runs as a team in 2018 led by Ben Gibson '18 with 18 home runs, Scafariello with 15 and Vulgamore with 10 as the trio finished in the top five individually for home runs on the season. Ben Gibson's 18 home runs were the most in Division I program history.
Successful Careers
Quinnipiac is returning most of the offense from a season ago but graduated Ben Gibson '18 who set single-season Division I program records as a senior with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs. In addition to the Gibson, the Bobcats also graduated right-hander Taylor Luciani who tied the Division I single-season program record with eight wins and through 85.2 innings in 2018. In his career, Luciani was third in Division I program history with 18 wins, 254.1 innings pitched and a 3.75 ERA while his 164 strikeouts were seventh.
