Freshman Julianna Cappello Scores Second Career Goal
HAMDEN, Conn. – Julianna Cappello scored her second goal of the season on Friday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium, as the Bobcats fell vs. Villanova by the final score of 2-1 in BIG EAST play.
Cappello – a freshman – now has two goals in the last five games for Quinnipiac. With the loss, the Bobcats move to 3-9 (1-3 BIG EAST) in 2019.

First Quarter
- 3:06 (Villanova 1, Quinnipiac 0) Megan Vermeil scored the first goal of the contest just over three minutes into action to give the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage. Lydia Sydnor shot toward the cage, then Quinnipiac graduate student Bianka Strubbe recorded a defensive save. The ball then deflected to Vermeil, who scored her fourth goal of the season.
- 4:58 (Quinnipiac 1, Villanova 1): The Bobcats evened the score less than two minutes later when freshman Julianna Cappello scored her second goal of the season. Cappello carried the ball in from outside the circle, then placed it between the Villanova goalkeeper's feet to tie the game 1-1.
- 43:55 (Villanova 2, Quinnipiac 1): Lydia Sydnor scored the game-winning goal with 1:05 left in the third quarter, finishing on a pass from Abby Siana to give the Wildcats the lead. Sydnor now has a team-best 10 goals for Villanova.
- Cappello has scored twice in the last three weeks. She recorded her first career goal on Sept. 27 vs. Georgetown before scoring again in Friday's game.
- The Bobcats outshot Villanova 12-8 overall, including a game-high five shots in the first quarter of action. Quinnipiac also attempted six penalty corners.
- Goalkeeper Hedda Biermann-Ratjen made two more saves in 56+ minutes of action. She now has 53 stops and a 2.38 goals-against average this season.
- Bianka Strubbe attempted a team-best five shots for the Bobcats, and both Cappello and Brooke Whipkey recorded three.
- Quinnipiac is now 1-4 all-time vs. Villanova.
- The Bobcats return to play on Sunday, Oct. 13, traveling to Maine for another BIG EAST matchup at 12:00 p.m.
