HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Burt Kahn Court to open up the home MAAC slate this weekend with matches scheduled for Saturday and Sunday against Iona and Manhattan.
Last Weekend
Quinnipiac kicked off MAAC play with a trip to New Jersey to face Rider and Saint Peter's. Despite a close match, the Bobcats fell to the Broncs before rebounding to win a five-set thriller at Saint Peter's with several players playing one of the best matches of their careers.
Scouting Iona
The Gaels come into the weekend with a 3-4 mark, most recently taking down the Manhattan Jaspers for their first league win of the season. Iona also has wins over New Hampshire and Saint Francis University on the season. Claire Archibald has been Iona's top hitter with 3.88 kills per set and a .267 hitting percentage while Emma Rose has been phenomenal as the setter with 10.08 assists per set and 11 service aces.
Scouting Manhattan
The jaspers have struggled this season as they are winless to open the year and are in search of their first win since Nov. 1. Manhattan has won just two sets all year and fell to Iona, 3-0, in their MAAC opener. The Jaspers average 7.85 kills per set, led by Casey Monroe's 1.52 kills per set and Erin Hoener's 1.46. On the defensive side of things, Alyssa Rehrer has been among the best in the MAAC with 4.02 digs per set.
Approaching Milestones
Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey) recorded a service ace last weekend for the 99th of her career to pull within one of 100, looking to become the third player in Division I program history with 100 career aces. Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) is not far behind as she tallied two to get her 95.
Sher-Fire Approach
Morgan Sherwin (Coplay, Pennsylvania) had a match to remember against Saint Peter's as she had career-highs with 22 kills and 12 digs for her first career double-double to go along with a .321 hitting percentage. Add 10 kills from the previous afternoon against Rider, and Sherwin averaged 16 kills per match on the weekend. Sherwin leads the team with 119 total kills and 2.77 kills per set this season, which is tied for seventh in the MAAC.
Miller Time
Kat Miller's impressive senior season continues for the Bobcats as she also had a match to remember against Saint Peter's with 17 kills and 21 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. She remains 22nd in the nation with 22 service aces on the season and maintains the top mark in the MAAC. Miller is also approaching 1,000 digs in her career as she comes into the weekend with 971, looking to become the fourth player in Division I program history to reach 1,000 career digs. On the season, Miller is 10th in the MAAC averaging 2.58 kills per set and eighth with 0.79 blocks per set.
Setting It Up
Pansari was on fire in that Saint Peter's match, picked up her first double-double of the season with a season-high 53 assists and 14 digs to go along with four kills. Her 53 assists marked her seventh career 50-assist match. On the season, Pansari is averaging 8.30 assists per game while her 19 kills in 12 matches puts her on pace to shatter her career-high of 28 set in each of her past two seasons. Her 8.30 assists per set ranks fourth in the MAAC.
Digging Out of Trouble
Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) continues to shine as the Bobcats' libero as she tied her career-high with 23 digs in last Sunday's match at Saint Peter's and racked up three service aces. Rodriguez has now recorded four matches of at least 20 digs. This season is right on par for Maria as she averages 3.16 digs per set.
Call Her Accurate
Lydia Jones (Glenn Dale, Maryland) put on her best performance yet as a Bobcat against the Peacocks on Sunday as she recorded a career-high 14 digs and dazzled with a .393 hitting percentage to boost her season hitting percentage of .330, good for second in the MAAC.
