Sherwin Notches 10 Kills, Baker Has Five of Seven Kills in Third Set as Comeback Bid Falls Short
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team battled all afternoon long but could not get a comeback jumpstarted as the Bobcats fell to the Rider Broncs, 3-0, in the MAAC opener Saturday afternoon.
Morgan Sherwin (Coplay, Pennsylvania) registered her fifth double-digit kill performance of the season and Maggie Baker (Huntington Beach, California) had five of her seven kills in the third set, but could not spark the Bobcats to the win despite a late third-set rally as Quinnipiac attempted a comeback bid.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (Quinnipiac 19, Rider 25)
- After Rider took a 2-0 lead to open the match, Quinnipiac won six of the next seven points as part of their hot start, including two kills from Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania)
- The Broncs clawed right back with five straight points and six of the next seven to re-claim a 9-7 lead
- The two teams continued to trade momentum shifts as Quinnipiac took a 12-10 lead by winning five of the next six points before Rider won six straight points to take a 16-12 lead
- Rider continued to inch its lead before Quinnipiac pulled back within two at 20-18 but the Broncs won five of the final six points to take the set
- The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open the second set due to a couple of Rider attack errors as well as kills from Miller and Kaleigh Oates (Downingtown, Pennsylvania)
- Rider took 11 of the next 14 points to extend its lead to five at 12-7 before a Quinnipiac timeout.
- The Broncs extended their lead to 19-10 before the Bobcats pulled back within two at 21-19
- In that stretch, Quinnipiac won four straight points to force a Rider timeout
- After that Rider timeout, the Broncs won two points before five straight points from the Bobcats brought them back within two thanks to four Rider attack errors and a kill by Lydia Jones (Glenn Dale, Pennsylvania)
- Rider took two more points before the two teams traded points to close out the set with the Broncs taking a 2-0 lead in the match
- Quinnipiac and Rider were even for much of the third set but the Bobcats couldn't force a fourth one after a late surge from the Broncs
- With the score tied 7-7, Rider won four straight points and forced Quinnipiac to call an early timeout
- The Bobcats battled right back to pull back within a point after back-to-back kills from Baker
- Rider took a 16-13 lead but once again Quinnipiac battled back with kills from Gabby Horman (Smithtown, New York), Miller and Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, New York)
- Once again, the Broncs tallied four straight points but the Bobcats answered again with four of the next five points after a pair of kills from Oates and one from Baker
- After a Lauren Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) ace pulled Quinnipiac within one point, Rider won the final three points to secure the conference opener
- Sherwin posted 10 kills and had a .156 hitting percentage in Saturday's effort
- Three Bobcats finished the game with at least seven kills
- Kat Miller continued her impressive season with seven kills, seven digs and five blocks (one solo) as she moved to 950 career digs, looking to become the fourth player in Division I program history with 1,000 digs
- Pansari recorded a service ace for the 99th of her career as she looks to become the third player in Division I program history to record 100 aces
- Baker continued to command the net as a rookie with seven digs and had a .238 hitting percentage in 21 attacks
- Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) paced the Bobcats with nine digs
