HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team eagerly kicks off the 2018 MAAC schedule this weekend with a trip to New Jersey to take on the Rider Broncs and Saint Peter's Peacocks.
The Hampton Inn-vitational
Quinnipiac picked up its first win of the 2018 season this past Friday over Coppin State in the first game of the Hampton Inn-vitational, hosted by Bryant. The Bobcats then lost a five-set battle with Middle Tennessee State before dropping the final game of the weekend at Bryant. Morgan Sherwin was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Scouting Rider
The Broncs come into the weekend with a 4-3 record overall but have won four of their last five matches. Last weekend, the Broncs took two of three matches at the La Salle tournament, highlighted by wins against Kent State and NJIT. Savannah Logan leads the team offensively with 82 kills, averaging 2.83 kills per set, while Anilee Sher leads the team with 258 assists to average 8.90 assists per set to go with 14 service aces. Rachelle Runyon has been stellar defensively with 110 digs and an average of 3.67 digs per set.
Scouting Saint Peter's
Saint Peter's enters the weekend with a 2-11 record in the first 13 matches and have lost eight straight following a win at Lafayette on August 27. This past weekend, the Peacocks were swept in three straight matches at the Denver Invitational against Idaho State, Denver and Fairleigh Dickinson. Alanis Alvarado paces the team with 134 kills and 2.85 kills per set while Karla Seda has 12 service aces. Alvarado is also second on the team with 126 digs (2.68 per set) while Seda has 158 digs and 3.59 per set.
Approaching Milestones
Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey) and Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) are both approaching 100 service aces in their careers, looking to become the third and fourth players to reach 100 service aces in the program's Division I history. Pansari comes into the weekend with 98 aces while Miller has 93 after recording 20 so far this season.
Ace of Spades
Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) has been on a tear from the serving line this season, already racking up 20 service aces to rank first in the MAAC and 17th nationally. This past weekend, Miller had nine service aces and has 15 total in her past five matches. Miller is one of the Bobcats best all-around weapons as she has 769 career kills and 943 career digs. She is tied for the team lead this season with 87 kills (2.49 per set) while her 80 digs (2.29 per set) are second on the team.
Morgan's World
Morgan Sherwin (Coplay, Pennsylvania) racked up 27 kills this past weekend at the Hampton Inn-vitational, including an impressive 12-kill performance against Bryant in the weekend finale. Sherwin is tied with Miller for the most kills (87) on the team this season.
Pan-orama
Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey) has quarterbacked the Quinnipiac offense with solid play as the Bobcats setter and is coming off her best weekend yet. Pansari racked up 10 kills to go with her 99 assists over the weekend. She played some of her best volleyball yet this season with five kills and 32 assists against Bryant in the first game just after a three-kill, 37-assist match vs. Middle Tennessee State. After her impressive play, Pansari moved past Janka Lopatto for second in Division I program history with 2,622 career assists, which is also good for third all-time in program history.
Digging Deep
Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) had her best weekend yet at the Hampton Inn-vitational as she had three straight matches with double-digit digs, including a season-high 19 digs against Middle Tennessee State. She was one dig away from her fifth 20-dig match of her career.
Ms. Jones
Lydia Jones (Glenn Dale, Maryland) returned to the Bobcats lineup with 17 kills over the weekend. In her first two matches of the Hampton Inn-vitational, Jones had eight kills and a .462 hitting percentage and six kills with a .417 hitting percentage. In the final game of the weekend, Jones recorded five blocks, including three solos.
Baker's Dozen (Plus Seven)
Maggie Bake got back to her impressive attacking performance in the three matches at Bryant this past weekend, totaling 20 kills. In Saturday's two matches, she combined for 15 kills with eight of them coming against the Bulldogs in the final match.
