NORTHFIELD, Vermont - The Quinnipiac women's rugby team will hit the road and travel north to face off against NIRA foe Norwich on Saturday, September 15 at 11 AM. The Bobcats will face off with the Cadets in a battle of the NIRA Quarterfinals, searching for their first win of 2018.
GAME NOTES:
LAST TIME OUT
The Bobcats dropped last week's contest to the Dartmouth Big Green, 40-22, last Saturday. The Bobcats were led offensively by Emily Roskopf (Dublin, California), Mikah Maples (Mowequa, Illinois) and Clara Lemal-Brown (Wooster, Ohio), who all struck for tries against Dartmouth. Mckenna Haz recorded two conversions on the day, pushing her total to four this season.
SCOUTING NORWICH
Norwich will kick off its 2018 campaign against Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon. The Cadets come into the 2018 season after striking for their first winning season in 2017. Norwich made it the NIRA Quarterfinals before falling to the Bobcats at the Quinnipiac Rugby Field. The Cadets lost two NIRA All-American selections, Denise Zambon and Vic Olchowoj. However, Norwich still returns a two-time NIRA All-American Selection in Sheila Decker, who led the Cadets with 12 tries and 31 conversions in 2017.
LAST TIME THESE TWO TEAMS DUELED
The Bobcats secured a birth in the NIRA Semifinals with a 55-7 victory over the Cadets in the NIRA Quarterfinals last fall. Graduate Ilona Maher ('18) recorded two tries and two assists in the match and Flora Poole ('18) tallied two tries of her own and four assists on the day. The 2018 captains, Roskopf and Maples, combined for two tries of their own and one assist. The Bobcats also scorched Norwich earlier in 2017, defeating the Cadets 52-7 last September.
THEY'REEEE BAAAAACK
The Bobcats have a wealth of talent returning, including All-American Emily Roskopf, who will be trying to pull off the rare feat of winning four national titles in four years of college (along with fellow senior Caitria Sands). Junior Mikah Maples also emerged as a significant offensive weapon last season, scoring twice in both the NIRA Semifinals and Finals, while last year's freshman class, led by regular starters Carson Hann, Destiny Henry and Jordan Cowan, had an immediate impact on last year's national title team and will take on even larger roles as sophomores.
