HAMDEN, Conn. -- The Quinnipiac men's tennis team saw its four-match win streak snapped, as well as its perfect 6-0 mark in MAAC play, as it fell to Monmouth 7-0 on Saturday afternoon in a battle of conference unbeatens.
With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 9-9 overall and 6-1 in the MAAC, while Monmouth improves to 12-13 overall and 6-0 in the MAAC, putting it in position to clinch the regular season title outright with a win against Marist tomorrow.
The Bobcats had a chance to take the doubles point, as they were in close battles at both No. 1 and No. 2 before the Hawks prevailed late. Sophomore Axel Stern and freshman Hielke Moore fell on the short end of a 7-5 decision at No. 2, while senior Julian Rozenstein and sophomore Patrick Cachapero were edged 6-4 at No. 1.
Cachapero tried to give the Bobcats some momentum in singles with a 6-3 win in the first set at No. 4, but the Hawks were able to win tiebreakers at No. 3 and No. 5 to take the first set on five of the six courts. Monmouth was then able to close it out by taking the second sets on all six courts, while Max Benaim came back to win in three sets at No. 4 (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).
Quinnipiac honored its two seniors prior to the match for Senior Day -- Rozenstein, who ranks tied for second all-time in Quinnipiac history with 137 wins, and Alper, who ranks ninth in school history with 93 wins. Alper had 23 wins as a freshman, which ranks just one shy of the Bobcat record for wins in a season of 24, which Rozenstein tied as a sophomore.
The Bobcats will be back in action next weekend for the MAAC Championships at Mercer County Park in New Jersey, where it will open with a semifinal match on Saturday against an opponent to be determined after this weekend's play concludes.
