FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Quinnipiac men's tennis team moved to 6-0 in the MAAC on the season with a 5-2 road win over Fairfield, setting up a battle with fellow unbeaten Monmouth on Saturday for a chance to secure the top seed in next weekend's conference tournament.
With the win, the Bobcats are 9-8 overall and have won four matches in a row, while Fairfield falls to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in the MAAC with the loss.
Senior Julian Rozenstein continued to dominate in the closing stretch of his career at No. 1 singles. After earning the MAAC Player of the Week Award for his performance last week, he earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against the Stags. He has won his last four matches in MAAC play (over Marist, Siena, Rider and Fairfield) by an aggregate score of 48-8. He also added a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Patrick Cachapero to improve to 12-0 in the MAAC this season (6-0 singles, 6-0 doubles) while helping the Bobcats earn the doubles point for a 1-0 lead.
Cachapero earned the second singles win for the Bobcats to push their lead to 3-0, taking a close 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3. Sophomore Axel Stern then wrapped up the team win with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to give Quinnipiac its fourth point.
With the team win sewn up, the Bobcats were able to breathe easily as the final three singles matches all went into three sets. Freshman Hielke Moore took his match at No. 6 after losing a first set tiebreaker (6-7, 6-2, 10-4) to make the score 5-0, but the Stags were able to get two points at No. 2 and No. 5 to make the final score 5-2. Stern and Moore combined for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles as well, while senior Kyle Alper and sophomore Austin Yannone took a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Quinnipiac can clinch the top seed in the conference tournament with a win over defending league champion Monmouth on Saturday. Monmouth could clinch it with a win over Quinnipiac on Saturday, followed by a win over Marist on Sunday.
