Tufto Tallies Hat Trick, Five Points in 7-2 Rout of Maine

No. 10/10 Men's Ice Hockey Dominates Opening Game of Two-Game Series
ORONO, Maine – Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) tallied his first career hat trick Friday night as he helped lead the No. 10/10 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team to a 7-2 victory over the Maine Black Bears at Alfond Arena.
Tufto scored all three of his goals in the first two periods on Friday's game as he recorded Quinnipiac's second hat trick of the season. Tufto also added a pair of assists for his first career five-point game.
Four other Bobcats netted goals in the victory as Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey), Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia), Wyatt Bongiovanni (Birmingham, Michigan) and Joe O'Connor (Hamden, Connecticut) all found the back of the net.
Andrew Shortridge (Anchorage, Alaska) was spectacular between the pipes for the Bobcats as he made 33 saves in his fourth consecutive victory.

- (00:30, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 1, Maine 0: Tufto put home his first goal of the night just 30 seconds into the game after redirecting a shot from Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) from the point that floated over Main goaltender Jeremy Swayman. Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) recorded the secondary assist.
- (12:25, 1st period) – Quinnipiac 2, Maine 0: Tufto buried his second of the game as he cleaned up a rebound on the back post after Brandon Fortunato (North Hills, New York) started the rush and Michael Lombardi through the puck off Tufto before he swiped it home
- (2:55, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 3, Maine 0: Alex Whelan scored the Bobcats third straight goal to open the game as he rifled home a one-timer in the slot after Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) made a great play on the goal line to keep possession of the puck and free himself up to make the centering feed. Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) also had an assist on the goal.
- (13:08, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 3, Maine 1: The Black Bears got a goal back as Mitchell Fossier carried the puck up the left boards before finding Chase Pearson alone on the back door with pass before Pearson one-timed home the puck past Shortridge.
- (19:53.2, 2nd period) – Quinnipiac 4, Maine 1: Tufto capped off his first career hat trick on a power-play goal with just 6.8 seconds to go in the second period. Priskie chased down the puck in the far corner and made a backhanded pass to Fortunato low in the left circle. Fortunato fed the puck across the slot to Tufto wide open on the back door to tap home his third goal.
- (10:32, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 5, Maine 1: de Jong got in the scoring mix midway through the third period as he one-timed the Bobcat after Tufto found him wide open on the weak side from behind the Maine goal.
- (13:12, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 6, Maine 1: Bongiovanni managed to just tip home his sixth goal of the season as redirected a feed from Tufto as he was pulled down to the ice.
- (15:00, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 6, Maine 2: Maine got a late goal back in the third period in four-on-four action as Cameron Spicer wristed home a shot from the right point off a feed from Alexis Binner on his left.
- 19:33.6, 3rd period) – Quinnipiac 7, Maine 2: O'Connor scored his second goal of the season with just 26.4 seconds to go in the period as Daniel Winslow (Fairfield, Connecticut) won a faceoff in the left circle back to O'Connor who fired the puck top shelf past Swayman.
- Tufto's hat trick was the first of his career and just his second multiple-goal game as he took over the ECAC Hockey lead with nine goals this season
- Previously, Tufto had scored two goals just one other time in his career against Vermont on Oct. 13, 2016
- Tufto also added two assists for his first career five-point game and the second five-point game of the season (Brandon Fortunato vs. AIC, Oct. 27)
- Shortridge was stellar between the pipes and made a season-high 33 saves in his fourth consecutive victory to open the season
- Quinnipiac has scored a power-play goal in three straight games and nine of its last 10
- The Bobcats have scored at least seven goals twice this season and have at least five goals four times
- de Jong scored his second goal of the season for the Bobcats as he put home a one-timer from the right circle. He is tied for the team-high among freshmen with nine points after adding an assist for his second multi-point game
- Whelan scored his fifth goal of the season and now has goals in back-to-back weekends
- Bongiovanni scored his ECAC Hockey-rookie leading sixth goal of the season
- O'Connor found the back of the net for the second time this season and has goals in back-to-back weekends
- Fortunato picked up two assists in the victory for his third multi-assist game of the season and fourth multi-point effort
- His 13 assists are the most in ECAC Hockey and second-most in the nation
- Priskie also picked up two helpers in his second-straight two-assist game
- He now has points in 10 of 12 games this season and is currently riding a three-game point streak
- Cukste maintained pace on the assist front as he tallied an assist for a third straight game to record his ninth of the season
- Cukste is one of eight Bobcats with at least nine points this season
- Winslow picked up his first career assist as he won the faceoff on O'Connor's goal and now has three points this season
- Lombardi recorded his second career point and first career assist
