INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Quinnipiac field hockey senior captain Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) was announced as a nominee for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award, as released by the NCAA on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. King is the third Quinnipiac student-athlete to be nominated for the award joining Nicole Lewis in 2013 and Tara Thibeault in 1997.
"I'm incredibly honored to be considered for the NCAA Woman of the Year award," King said. "I know that there are so many amazing female athletes in the country and I am grateful to be recognized among them. This nomination is not only a testament to the work that I put in, but also the incredible support I received from my coaches and the entire Quinnipiac athletic department."
The NCAA Woman of the Year program honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female college athletes from all three divisions. To be eligible, a nominee must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport, must have completed eligibility in her primary sport, and must have earned her undergraduate degree by Summer 2017.
Each conference office reviews nominations from its core member schools (and sponsored sports) and submits its conference nominee(s) to the NCAA. As Quinnipiac does not compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in field hockey, King was nominated as an associate conference member as the Bobcats compete in the BIG EAST.
King was one of 37 student-athletes from all three NCAA divisions to be nominated from an associate sport. Of the pool of 543 nominees – the most in the history of the program - the selection committee will select the Top 30,10 from each division, and then three finalists from each division. The Committee on Women's Athletics will then select the winner from the Top 9. This year, the committee will select up to two student-athletes from the pool of associate school nominations to advance.
"Angie King is an amazing role model for our program and all of Quinnipiac's student-athletes, and an outstanding candidate for the NCAA Woman of the Year award," Quinnipiac field hockey coach Becca Main said. "We're so proud of Angie for this honor as well as all of her accomplishments as a member of our program. Her commitment to excellence, on and off the field, is a result of her natural leadership ability and desire to compete at an elite level. She has dedicated herself to excelling in all facets of her college experience, and I'm sure she will be successful at whatever she does in the future. I want to congratulate Angie, not only for being nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, but for everything that she has accomplished."
King completed her four years at Quinnipiac as one of the most decorated student-athletes in University history. Her list of honors includes:
