
QU Women's Golf Places Four In Top 10 For First Round Of Seahawk Invitational

LITTLESTOWN, Pennsylvania – The Quinnipiac University women's golf team placed four student-athletes in the top 10 on its way to a third-place standing after the first round of the Wagner Seahawk Invitational at Quail Valley Golf Course in Littlestown, Pennsylvania.
"We had a good day on the golf course today," head coach John O'Connor said. "The conditions were beautiful. It's wonderful to be back playing in "golf weather". Luciana [Tobia-Palza] again proves why she is our No. 1 player. She did a great job with a 75."
Luciana Tobia-Palza (La Paz, Bolivia) finished the first round with a 75 ( 2) for a tie of third place. Freshman stand-out Alexandra Sazhin (New Fairfield, Connecticut) was tied for fifth with a 76 while Emily Ribbins (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) shot a career-best 77 ( 4) for a tie of eighth place. Estefania Morales (Caracas, Venezuala), playing as an individual, shot a 76 for her second-best of the season and tie of fith place.
"Alexandra [Sazhin] is playing very consistent and is really bringing her game up and it looks things will be good as we get closer to our conference championship," O'Connor said. "Emily Ribbins did a great job today. Our individual, Estefania Morales, shot a 76 and I'm very proud of her."
Ribbins' 77 is not only a career best but her 8th-place finish is tied for her career-best for a single round. The Bobcats' senior shot a career-high 84.90 last season as a junior but has shaved 2 ½ strokes off her previous year's score in 2016-17.
Navy led the field with a 297 ( 9) ahead of Sacred Heart at 310 ( 22) and Quinnipiac at 311 ( 23). Quinnipiac led Saint Francis, Wagner, Central Connecticut State, LIU Brooklyn, Niagara, Delaware State and St. Francis (N.Y.).
The Bobcats' 311 is their fourth-best low round in program history, matching their combined score for the first round of the 2016 MAAC Championship and the third round of the 2016 Quinnipiac Classic. The Bobcats also entered the tournament with a season average of 322.69 before shooting 11 strokes better than their average.
Tobia-Palza entered the weekend with an average of 79.81 before shooting her second-best round of the season at Quail Valley. The reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year has now shot 76 or lower in three of her last four rounds.
Sazhin also bested her season average (80.44) by more-than four strokes and has now shut under 80 in seven of her first 17 career rounds.
Quinnipiac will play the final 18 holes of the Seahawk Invitational on Monday, Apr. 3.
