
QU Women's Tennis Falls to Wesleyan in 4-3 Thriller

NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut - In what was a duel that ultimately came down to the last match, Quinnipiac women's tennis fell, 4-3, in thrilling fashion to Wesleyan at the North Haven Health & Racquet Club on Saturday evening.
With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 5-7 (3-0 MAAC), while the No. 8 nationally-ranked Wesleyan Cardinals improved to 4-0.
The day began with the No. 1 doubles match, where Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) fell to Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu, 6-3. Quinnipiac came back to win the No. 3 match, as Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) defeated Aashli Budhiraja and Julia Kim, 6-3. The Bobcats kept momentum rolling and took the No. 2 match behind Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Kelsi Oliphant's (Calgary, Alberta) strong play. The Quinnipiac duo defeated Nicole McCann and Helen Klass-Warch, 6-4, to take the doubles point.
Quinnipiac held a 1-0 lead as play moved to singles competition. In the No. 3 match, Young was able to best Budhiraja in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1. It was Young's 31st victory of the season, which is currently tops on the team. Horton fell in the No. 2 match to Yu in three sets. Horton stole the first set 6-3, but dropped the following two, 6-2 and 6-2. Lu then took on Chong in the No. 1 match and dropped the first set 7-5, but took the second 6-4. However, Chong outlasted Lu, as the Cardinal took the final set 6-2.
Quinnipiac bounced back to take the No. 4 match, as Rodriguez rolled past Klass-Warch in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2 to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. Wesleyan tied the match at 3-3 after McCann defeated Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1, setting up the No. 6 match to be a winner-takes-all match.
Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) took on Dasha Dubinsky in the No. 6 singles match to decide which team takes the victory. Dubinsky took the first set 6-2, but Mircea took the second set 6-4. In the third and final set, Mircea was down three games to none, but ran off a 4-1 run to tie the games at 4-4. However, Dubinsky took the final two games and the set, 6-4, to hand the Bobcats a tough 4-3 loss.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Sunday, March 26, as the Bobcats play host to the University of Rhode Island Rams at the North Haven Health & Racquet Club at 6 p.m.
