NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team was able to cruise past the University of Rhode Island Rams, 5-2, Sunday evening at the North Haven Health & Racquet Club.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 6-7 (3-0 MAAC) on the season, while URI drops to 4-9.
Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California), Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) all recorded two wins each in the Bobcats' win over the Rams.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match, where Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) and Lu defeated Nicole Legler and Rachel Smilansky, 6-0. Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) then teamed up to coast past Tiara Higuchi and Mihaela Codreanu, 6-0, to clinch the doubles' point for the Bobcats. Oliphant and Rencheli are undefeated in their four matches together. Young and Horton then took the court and defeated Emily Zargham and Ariel Haber, 6-2, to complete the doubles' sweep for Quinnipiac. The win was the duo's 19th of the season, which is tops on the team.
Quinnipiac held a 1-0 lead as play moved to singles competition, where Horton and Zargham competed in the No. 3 match. Horton cruised past Zargham in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead after Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) defeated Legler in the No. 6 match in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2.
Rodriguez fell to Higuchi in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0, then Rencheli fell to Codreanu in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1, to cut Quinnipiac's lead to one. However, that would be the last match URI won, as Quinnipiac took the last two singles matches to win the duel.
Young defeated Haber in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-4, to clinch the win for the Bobcats. It was her 33rd win of the year, which is tops on the team. It was also Young's third straight win in singles competition, which is the longest streak on the team currently.
Quinnipiac closed the match with a win as Lu was able to defeat Smilansky in three sets. Smilansky took the first set 6-4, but Lu swept her the rest of the way, 6-4 and 10-7.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team will be back in action on Saturday, April 1st, when the Bobcats travel to take on Fordham at 1 p.m.
