TEANECK, New Jersey - Quinnipiac women's tennis freshman Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) won the clinching match in a Bobcats' 4-3 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 7-7 (3-0 MAAC), while the Knights fell to 6-8 after the loss.
Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Rodriguez both earned two wins on the day.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match where Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Rodriguez teamed up to defeat Liza Rachenko and Sabrina Helm, 6-2. Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Rencheli then took the court in the No. 2 doubles match against Patricia and Tatiana Eftenoiu, defeating the FDU duo, 6-3 to secure the doubles point for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac secured the sweep after Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) cruised past Marta Ruszczynska and Shreya Pasricha, 6-2. It was the duo's 20th win of the season, which is tops on the team.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead after Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) won her match by default over Helm. The Knights got on the board after Ruszczynska defeated Horton in straight sets in the No. 3 singles match, 6-1 and 6-2. FDU tied the match at 2-2 after Lu fell to Tatiana Eftenoiu in three sets. Lu lost the first set 6-4, but came back hard in the second set with a 6-0 win. However, Tatiana took the final set 6-0.
Rencheli put the Bobcats back on top after defeating Pasricha in three sets in the No. 1 match. Rencheli took the first set 6-3, dropped the second 0-6, but stormed back to take the third set 6-1. The Knights tied the match after Rachenko defeated Young in three sets. Young dropped the first set, 6-4 but battled back to take the second set 6-3. However, Rachenko bested Young in the final set, 6-3, setting up the No. 5 match as a winner takes all match.
Rodriguez took the court in the No. 5 match against Patricia Eftenoiu, looking to secure the win for the Bobcats. Patricia Eftenoiu narrowly took the first set 7-6 (5), but Rodriguez was undeterred. Rodriguez came back to take the second set, 6-3, then maintained momentum and took the third set 6-3 to secure the 4-3 win for the Bobcats.
