HAMDEN, Conn. - Senior goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) broke the program's all-time shutouts record on Saturday afternoon at High Point Solutions Arena, as No. 10/10 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey skated past Union, 1-0, on Senior Day in Hamden.
Rossman registered her 26th career shutout, passing Chelsea Laden ('15) and Victoria Vigilanti ('13) in the nine-save effort. It took the senior netminder 81 career games to break the record. She's also currently on pace to break the program's career save percentage record (.936) and goals-allowed mark (1.15).
Freshman Abby Cleary (Buffalo, New York) registered her first career goal, the game-winner, in the victory.
Quinnipiac moves to 20-8-6 (13-6-3 ECAC) on the season, while Union falls to (5-28-1 (2-19-1 ECAC). The Bobcats are now 27-0-4 all-time against Union with the win.
Cleary got the Bobcats on the board 9:04 into the second period, grabbing her first-career tally to make it 1-0. Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) won a faceoff in Union's zone and played it back to Emma Greco (Burlington, Ontario). Greco, from the point, fired a cross-ice wrist shot at Union's net, and Cleary chipped in the rebound from the right side. The freshman now has one goal and one assist for her career, while Samoskevich (16) and Greco (10) each earned helpers on the play.
Union had a good chance to tie the game with 2:52 left in the second period, intercepting a pass and skating down ice on a 2-on-1, but Rossman was there to make the big save following a pass out in front of the net to preserve the lead.
Quinnipiac killed off all three penalties it committed, including a 5-on-3 stretch with just under 17 minutes left in the third period.
Meghan Turner, Taryn Baumgardt, Danielle Marmer, Emma Woods, Emma Greco, Mika Nervick and Sydney Rossman and team trainer Lauren Herrick were all honored in a pre-game ceremony as part of Senior Day festivities. The seniors helped propel the program to new heights, already winning a total of 100 games in four seasons. They helped the Bobcats reach the NCAA Tournament in 2014-15, and were a member of the 2015-16 team that won the program's first ECAC Hockey Championship.
The six senior skaters have combined for 89 goals goals and 144 assists for 233 points in total over the last four years in Hamden, while Rossman is currently on pace to break the program's record for goals-against average and save percentage.
The Bobcats are back in action next weekend, traveling to Princeton for a three-game series in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals in a matchup of the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds. Game 1 will be played on Feb. 24, Game 2 on Feb. 25, and Game 3 (if necessary) on Sunday, Feb. 26.
