BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team put forth a solid effort at the prestigious Valentine Invitational held on the campus of Boston University. Competing with a limited squad with the MAAC Championships slated for next weekend, those in competition showed well against a talented field.
Headlining the effort for the Bobcats was the group of 400m competitors as Christina Barbaro (Elk Township, New Jersey - pictured above), Melissa Solomon (Dorchester, Massachusetts) and Marlo Wehrer (Pequannock, New Jersey) each sported a new personal best when the day was finished. Barbaro made the biggest improvement as she clocked in at 58.09 seconds which is a full 1.31 seconds faster than her previous career best (59.40) from earlier this season at the Yale Season Opener. Solomon jumped up significantly as her time of 58.15 seconds on Friday easily bested her previous high of 58.72. Wehrer completed the trifecta with her time of 59.03 seconds at the Valentine Invitational. Barbaro finished 38th out of 88 runners while Solmon claimed 39th place and Wehrer placed 55th overall.
The shot put event also featured a pair of standout performances as Mikah Maples (Mowequa, Illinois) tossed a new program record for the third straight competition, posting a throw of 12.62m to best her previous record of 12.24m. Maples earned 14th place out of 40 competitors and was joined by Mackenzie Merkel (Hillsdale, New Jersey) who also posted a new personal-best with a throw of 12.14m which earned her 21st place.
The string of new personal records continued in the one mile run as Kaitlyn Hebert (Glastonbury, Connecticut) clocked in at 5:09.66 to best her previous career high by more than five seconds. In the 200m dash, it was Solomon again who scored another personal record with a time of 25.73 seconds which earned her 39th place in the sprint event. Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) was right behind in 43rd position with a time of 25.78.
Jacque again factored in the 60m dash as she led the Bobcat contingent clocking in at 7.98 seconds to finish 28th out of 88 sprinters. Bonnie Pisciotta (Lindenhurst, New York) also showed well placing 41st with a time of 8.16.
The middle distance competitors all competed in the 800m as the trio of Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut), Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) and Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Connecticut) were separated by just six positions in the standings. Reid led the way placing 35th out of 88 with a time of 2:14.79 while Caron crossed the line in 2:15.34 (38th) and Nabadduka was right behind in 2:16.11 (41st).
Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) continued to supply the Bobcats depth in the field events as she placed 18th in the weight throw (15.55m) and tied for 21st in the high jump (1.55m).
Picked to finish second in the MAAC Indoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Bobcats look to rise to the occasion next weekend as the two-day meet begins on Saturday, February 18 at the Armory in New York City.
