No. 15 QU Men's Ice Hockey Defeats Colgate, 4-1

HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked No. 15 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey defeated Colgate, 4-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 13-9-2 overall and 8-5-1 in ECAC Hockey while Colgate drops to 4-12-4 including a 2-5-1 ledger in league play.
Four different Bobcats scored for the second-straight game as Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado), Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota), Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) and Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) all scored for the Bobcats while Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) assisted on two goals.
In goal, Andrew Shortridge (Anchorage, Alaska) was rock-solid in his second-straight start, stopping 24 of Colgate's 25 shots on goal. Shortridge improves to 4-2-0 on the year and 3-0-0 against ECAC Hockey competition.
Smith put Quinnipiac out in front with the first of three unanswered goals just under thirteen minutes into the game. Cukste took control of the puck in the Bobcats' zone before handing it Kevin Duane (New Canaan, Connecticut). Duane played the puck off the boards in the neutral zone to Smith who skated down the right flank before sniping the puck top-shelf on Colgate's Colton Point to give Quinnipiac a one-goal lead. For Duane, it was his eighth point in the last nine games.
Pieper struck for his eighth goal of the season just under five minutes into the second period to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. Kevin McKernan (MIllbury, Massachusetts) skated up-ice before zipping a pass across the neutral zone to Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois). Rafferty split the defense and fired a shot on goal that Point turned away but Pieper, trailing the play, picked up the rebound and converted to give Quinnipiac a two-goal advantage.
Less than four minutes later it Shiplo's fourth goal of the season pushed Quinipiac's lead to 3-0. Cukste took a pass from Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota) and fired a shot goal that Point defended. Shiplo, crashing the net, picked up the deflected shot on the goal line and popped it over Colgate's goalie to give the Bobcats a three-goal lead.
With less than three minutes to play, Colgate scored on a power play opportunity when Jared Cockrell took a pass from Brett Corkey and wristed a shot through traffic that beat a screened-out Shortridge to put the Raiders on the board.
MacMaster gave the Bobcats a three-goal lead thirty-five seconds later with his sixth goal of the season. Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) stick-handled through a host of Colgate defenders before firing a shot on goal. Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) picked put the rebound and fired on goal, with Point stopping the puck and sending it air born. MacMaster, planted on the near-side post, poked the puck out of mid-air past Point to push Quinnipiac's lead back up to three goals.
Quinnipiac returns to action for a Top 20 match-up against No. 19 Cornell on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena. Following its tilt against the Big Red, the Bobcats will enjoy a weekend off before hosting Arizona State on Jan. 27-28.
