
Proyfon Lohaphaisan Shines in Day Two of QU Invitational

Hamden, Conn. - Quinnipiac women's tennis sophomore Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) was able to reach the Flight "C" singles semifinals on day two of the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Along with Lohaphaisan's strong play, many Bobcats were able to compete deep into the tournament, including sophomore Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) who won the Consolation "A" singles championship.
The day began with the Flight "A" singles matches, where senior Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) faced off against Catrina Ma of Fordham in the quarterfinals. Horton would go on to lose to Ma, 6-1 in straight sets.
In the Flight "B" bracket, freshman Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) was drew Jacqueline Fitz-Randolph of UConn in the quarterfinals. Rodriguez was unable to get past Fitz-Randolph in order to reach the semifinals, falling 6-3 and 6-2 in straight sets.
In Flight "C" singles, Lohaphaisan drew the matchup against Alexis Zobeideh of Fordham in the quarterfinals, with a trip to the semifinals on the line. Lohaphaisan rose to the challenge and defeated Zobeideh, 6-4 and 6-2 in straight sets.
In the Flight "D" bracket, senior Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) battled against Fordham's Destiny Gruinin in the quarterfinals. However, Oliphant would not come out on top, falling to Gruinin 6-1 and 7-5 in straight sets. Sophomore Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, NJ) was also in the Flight "D" quarterfinals, battling against Fiorella Coria of Drexel for a spot in the semifinals. Mircea won the first set 6-2 but was unable to keep the momentum rolling and lost the following two sets 2-6 and 10-12.
In the Consolation "A" singles bracket, Lu was able to edge out Providence's Risa Takenaka, 8-4. In the semifinals, Lu faced off against Maia Balce of of Fordham, and was able to beat her 8-3. In the championship, Lu matched up against Sacred Heart's Taylor Gurda, who Lu was able to dominate 8-1, winning the Consolation "A" singles championship.
In the Consolation "B" singles bracket, senior Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) was able to win her first matchup, 8-2 over Providence's Nicole Cyterski. In the semifinals, Young battled hard with Sacred Heart's Brianna Lauria, besting her 8-6 set, setting up a championship match with Army West Point's Kirby Einck. In the finals, Einck bested Young, beating her 8-4.
Freshman Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) was able to earn a victory in the Consolation "C" singles, over Fairfield's Karen McKeough, 8-1. However, Katzarkov lost in the following round to Fordham's Gianna Insogna, 8-2.
After singles competition was finished, doubles concluded the day. In doubles Flight "A", the Bobcats duo of Horton and Young defeated the Fordham duo of Mayu Soto and Estelle Wong, 6-1 in order to reach the championship. However, Horton and Young fell in the championship UConn's Fitz-Randolph and Gillian Perrotta, 7-5.
In the Flight "B" doubles semifinals, Rodriguez and senior Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) faced Army West Point's Danna Funaro and Steph Johnson for a shot in the championship match. However Rodriguez and Rencheli would fall just short, dropping the match 7-5.
The Quinnipiac Invitational kicks back up again on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 9 A.M. with the conclusion of all singles play.
