BOBCATS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK
After falling to Boston College 2-0 in the 2016 season opener at home, Quinnipiac men's soccer is looking to bounce back as it travels to another ACC foe, Louisville, on Monday, August 29. The match marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Bobcats enter the new year looking to return to their old form, which saw them win three-straight regular season conference titles from 2012-14 (2012 in the Northeast Conference and 2013-14 in the MAAC). Last season, Quinnipiac posted a 2-11-6 overall record (1-5-4 in the MAAC). The Bobcats have now lost seven consecutive season openers dating back to September 5, 2009 when they tied Yale, 1-1 in the first game of the year.
SEASON OPENER RECAP
No. 11 Boston College scored just 6:46 prior to halftime in Friday's opener at the QU Soccer Field, then again 4:39 into the second half. Quinnipiac had six shots in the loss. James Doig (Liverpool, England), Max Rothenbucher (Munich, Germany) and Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) each recorded a shot on net.
Dally had a chance to give the Bobcats a lead 25:58 into the first half. The sophomore got free inside the 18 and fired a shot just wide of the Eagles net. Dally had another good scoring opportunity in the second half, as he carried the ball up the left side and accelerated past a defender, firing the ball toward B.C. keeper Cedric Saladin. Saladin, who registered a three-save shutout, deflected Dally's shout out of bounds, forcing a corner kick.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Louisville played to a scoreless tie vs. Butler in its season opener. The Cardinals held a 23-8 advantage in shots and a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, but were unable to capitalize on scoring chances vs. the Bulldogs.
Graduate student Stefan Cleveland (3 saves) earned a shutout in net for Louisville. Prior to joining the Cardinals for the 2016 campaign, Stefan was a two-time First Team All-Ivy League Selection at Dartmouth. He posted a .067 goals-against average in 2015.
The Cardinals return two of its top four 2015 scorers this year, junior Tim Kubel (5g, 3a) and senior Daniel Johnson (5g, 0a). Johnson led the team with five shots in the 2016 season opener on Friday. Junior Mohamed Thiaw recorded four shots (3SOG) and junior Jack Gayton had four shots (2 SOG) in the tie vs. Butler, as well.
NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN
Freshman keeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made six saves in his collegiate debut for the Bobcats. Iakovidis made two impressive full-extension diving saves in the first half – from Boston College's Isaac Normesinu and Maximilian Schulze-Geisthovel – to keep things knotted 0-0.
BACK ON THE ATTACK
The Bobcats return four of their top five scorers in 2016. Sophomore Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) had two goals and three assists in 2015, Rothenbuecher recorded two goals and one assist, senior Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey) had two scores and an assist and Dally had one goal and two assists.
VETERAN REINFORCEMENTS
Doig and junior Shaquille Huggins also bring plenty of collegiate experience to the Bobcats 2016 roster. Doig started in 38 games during his first two seasons at Quinnipiac, scoring twice with nine assists in that span. He suffered a season-ending injury during the third game of the 2015 year. Huggins has played in 35 contests through his first two seasons.
DALLY EARNS SPOT ON JAMAICA U20 TEAM
Forward Rashawn Dally earned some impressive international experience this summer, nabbing a spot on the Jamaican National Under-20 Team. Dally joined Jamaica for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-20 Qualifiers in June. Jamaica went 2-1 in qualifiers with wins over host Dominican Republic and Dominica.
QUINNIPIAC PICKED SEVENTH IN MAAC
The Bobcats were picked to finish seventh in the MAAC in a preseason poll of the league's coaches. Quinnipiac received 51 points in the poll, putting it in between Marist in sixth place with 57 points and Canisius in eighth place with 47. Monmouth was selected as the favorite (120 points), while Rider (103 points) finished No. 2.
