Louisville, KY - The Quinnipiac University men's soccer team fell in overtime to Louisville, 2-1, in a non conference matchup on Monday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Freshman Eamon Whelan registered his first collegiate career goal for the Bobcats, attempting a team-high three shots on the night.
It was the second time in program history that Quinnipiac forced OT against an ACC opponent, the first coming in a 2-2 tie vs. Boston College on Sept. 9, 2013. The Bobcats fall to 0-1-0 with the loss, while Louisville improves to 1-0-1.
Senior goalkeeper Brian Westerman kept things close all night for Quinnipiac, registering six saves in his first start of the season. Westerman was pressured consistently by the Cardinals' attack, but was up to the task more times than not. He made a well-timed run off his line to clear Louisville's first good scoring change 16:22 into the first half, keeping things tied. With just three minutes until halftime, Louisville's Danny Reynold's belted a corner kick to Tim Kubel, who touched it toward goal. Westerman was again there, saving a one-hopper.
The Cardinals broke through at 48:37, when Mohammed Thiaw redirected a pass from Daniel Johnson to make it 1-0 Louisville.
Whelan then scored Quinnipiac's first goal of the 2016 season at 50:58 to tie the game 1-1. The freshman gathered a loose ball from eight yards out, then touched it past Louisville goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland to put the Bobcats' on the board.
Whelan, looking for his second goal of the night, got clear of the defense in the 65th minute but couldn't get an angle on Cleveland, who deflected it out of bounds with his right glove.
Brian Westerman then made yet another remarkable full-extension diving save in the 68th minute off a shot from Louisville's Cherif Dieye, keeping the game tied once again.
Whelan had another chance to give Quinnipiac the advantage in the 85th minute, attempting to head a corner in from the far post that when just wide of the net.
Then it was Westerman's turn to turn in another highlight reel stop, this time diving to block Geoffrey Dee's strike with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation.
Reynolds scored the game-winner for the Cardinals with 6:46 left in overtime.
Quinnipiac, however, controlled possession much more in the final 45 minutes of the contest for the second-straight game. The Bobcats registered 5-of-6 shots in the second half of its home opener vs. No. 11 Boston College, then 4-of-5 shots against Louisville came in the second half on Monday. Max Rothenbuecher and Matthew Taylor each had a shot on goal in the loss.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, traveling to Atlantic 10 Conference foe Fordham for a 7 p.m. start. The Bobcats' next home game will be Sunday, Sept. 4 against Lafayette (3 p.m.)
