HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac Athletics & Recreation officially announced Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) of the men's ice hockey team and Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Florida) of the women's tennis team as Quinnipiac's 2015-16 Male and Female Athletes of the Year at the department's annual awards banquet held on Sunday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center.
The senior goaltender Garteig earns Quinnipiac's Male Athlete of the Year honor after having recently signed an entry-level contract with the NHL's Vancouver Canucks. He is coming off an incredible season in which he led the Bobcats back to the NCAA Frozen Four and an appearance in the NCAA Championship Game. For the year, Garteig was 32-4-7 with a 1.91 goals-against average and .924 save percentage with eight shutouts. Garteig's 32 wins and eight shutouts rank first on the all-time single-season record list at Quinnipiac. For his career, Garteig posted a 78-25-16 record across three seasons as the Bobcats' starting netminder, breaking the program record in career wins (78), shutouts (19) and goals-against average (1.96).
Dzulynsky takes home Quinnipiac's Female Athlete of the Year honor after recording a terrific senior season for the women's tennis team, culminated in her second career MAAC Player of the Year award after having won the honor back in 2013-14. Dzulynsky tied her career-high with 36 overall wins in 2015-16, going 36-24 with 14 wins in singles and 22 wins in doubles. She was a perfect 7-0 in the MAAC at No. 1 singles and finished 6-1 in doubles play for a 13-1 overall MAAC record. Dzulynsky has led the Bobcats to three straight MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships and tallied 114 matches in her career, 108 of which have come at Quinnipiac. She became the 20th player in program history to record 100 career wins earlier this season. Dzulynsky will compete in her third straight NCAA Tournament this week when the Bobcats travel to the University of Miami to face the No. 7 nationally-ranked Hurricanes on Friday, May 13.
In addition to the announcements for Athletes of the Year, all 21 varsity programs at Quinnipiac announced their Most Valuable Players throughout the course of the program. A full list of the Team MVP's can be seen below.
