SPRING BREAK IN FLORIDA
The Quinnipiac softball team is heading down to Florida this weekend for two tournaments over spring break. The Bobcats will play a total of 11 games over 10 days in Clearwater. Quinnipiac will begin with the Under Armour Showcase on Friday, Mar. 11 against Army at 2:25 p.m. before taking on Green Bay at 4:30 p.m.
SCOUTING ARMY
The Black Knights enter the tournament supporting an overall record of 7-8 after wrapping up play at the Patriot Classic in Virginia last weekend. Army went 3-2 in the tournament, splitting games with both Marist and George Mason while also recording a 7-0 win over Howard. The Black Knights have won six of their last eight contests. Army is hitting .248 as a team with two batters over .300. Freshman Mae Wadyka leads the offense at .375 (15-for-40) with a .457 on base percentage through 14 appearances. Freshman Renee Poirier leads the pitching staff with a 2.13 earned run average while occupying a 0-3 overall record. Junior Kristen West has a 2,35 ERA and is 5-1 on the year for the Black Knights.
SCOUTING GREEN BAY
The Phoenix sit at 4-13 on the year and have lost their last seven straight games. Green Bay recorded wins over South Dakota State, Western Illinois, Loyola and the Bobcats. The Phoenix took down Quinnipiac in Chicago at the Total Control Sports Invitational, 5-3. The Bobcats led 3-0 in the game, but could not hold off Green Bay in the late innings. Junior Taylor Allie leads the offense with a .372 (16-for-43) batting average and nine RBI's.
SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos currently sit at 7-9 overall and are 1-3 in their last four contests. Western Michigan has been playing in the Under Armour Invitational since this past weekend and are 4-3 in Florida. Earlier this season, the Broncos went 1-4 at the New Mexico State Troy Cox Classic before going 2-2 at the Kennesaw State Tournament. WMU is hitting .262 as a team with three batters over .300. Junior Kelsea Cichocki leads the offense at .362 (17-for-47) with a slugging percentage of .596. Senior Allyson Kus heads the pitching staff with a 5-4 overall record and a 2.55 ERA.
SCOUTING BUTLER
The Bulldogs are currently 9-9 overall in the 2016 season with a .266 batting average. Butler is 7-3 in their last ten games after suffering a six-game losing streak earlier in the year. Most recently, the Bulldogs went 2-2 in Carbondale, Illinois with wins over Southern and Eastern Illinois. Through 18 games, junior Brandyce Sallee leads the offense with a .400 (22-for-55) batting average to go along with 12 RBI's and a .636 slugging percentage.
SCOUTING NORTHERN KENTUCKY
The Norse occupy a 5-10 overall record and are 4-1 over their last five games. Most recently, Northern Kentucky swept Wagner in a doubleheader in Clearwater. NKU began the year losing nine of their first ten games before heading to Florida. The Norse have two batters over .300, led by sophomore Alina Maher at .350 (14-for-40) with nine RBI's ad a .750 slugging percentage. Junior Charlie Nolen leads the pitching staff with a 3.68 earned run average and a 3-4 overall record in 10 appearances.
LAST TIME OUT
Last time out, the Bobcats went 4-1 at the Lady Pirate Classic in Virginia. Quinnipiac took down Princeton twice, Buffalo and Hampton but fell to Rhode Island. The Bobcats held the competition to just nine runs over five games.
MAAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Senior pitcher Sydney Robey was named the MAAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for her stellar performance over the weekend at the Lady Pirates Classic in Hampton, Virginia. Robey made three starts on the mound in Hampton, compiling a 2-0 record and a 0.95 earned run average over 19 innings pitched. The senior allowed just two earned runs and three walks while striking out 16 batters.
ALL AROUND ATHLETE
In addition to being named MAAC Pitcher of the Week, Robey also led the Bobcats at the plate in Virginia. Robey hit .429 (6-for-14) with two RBI's, a walk and two stolen bases. In the first game against Buffalo, the senior was 1-for-3 with a run scored. In two games against Princeton, Robey was 4-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored. She added another hit and run scored in the final game of the tournament against Hampton.
THE 300 CLUB
Through nine games, the Bobcats have three batters hitting at .300 or better. Sophmore Emily Czaja leads the offense at .385 (5-for-13) followed by senior Dani Edmands at .360 (9-for-25). Sophomore Miranda Magana currently occupies a .300 (9-for-30) batting average to round out the top three.
CASEY IN THE CLUTCH
In the first game against Princeton, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, knocking Robey out of the game. Sophomore Casey Herzog came in to replace Robey in the circle with no outs and Tigers occupying second and third. The sophomore got the Bobcats out of the jam, recording two strikeouts and forcing a ground ball out. Quinnipiac took the lead in their last at bats to give Herzog her first victory of the season.
ON DECK
After wrapping up the USF Under Armour Showcase, the Bobcats will take on UMass Lowell before beginning play in the USF Spring Break Tournament. On Wednesday, Mar. 16, QU will meet the River Hawks in Clearwater for an 11 a.m. contest.
DANI CHICAGO
Edmands finished the Total Control Sports Invitational with a .462 batting average (6-for-13) through four games. Edmands registered three multi-hit games while adding three RBI, two runs scored, a walk and a hit by pitch on the weekend.
WEEKEND SLUGFEST
Sophomore Maria Ascher recorded an impressive .700 slugging percentage over the weekend in Chicago. Ascher went 4-for-10 from behind the plate while leading the team with three doubles.
HAVE A DAY, MAGANA
On Saturday of the Total Control Sports Invitational, sophomore Miranda Magana went 3-for-6 with an RBI, run scored and a walk. Against Loyola, Magana was 2-for-3 with the game winning RBI off a single up the middle in the top of the seventh.
WINNER, WINNER
Senior pitcher Sydney Robey picked up her first win of the season against Loyola. Robey pitched the complete game, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three batters over seven innings.
THE MAAC PRESEASON POLL
The Quinnipiac University softball team was picked to finish eighth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Feb. 1, 2016.
BOBCAT RETURNEES
Quinnipiac returns 11 players from last year's squad, seven of which are juniors or seniors. In addition the Bobcats will look to a strong core of four sophomores who each played in at least 35 games including Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota), Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California), Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) and Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York). Both Ascher and Magana were two of four Bobcats to play in all 50 games.
HAMDEN ADVANTAGE
Last season, the Bobcats registered a 10-8 home record at the QU Softball Field while also going 6-4 in MAAC play in Hamden.
2015 ALL-MAAC ROOKIE TEAM
Third baseman Miranda Magana and starting pitcher Casey Herzog were honored on the All-MAAC Rookie Team for their stellar freshmen campaigns. Magana ranked third on the team with a .279 batting average and second on the squad with 38 hits and 18 RBI, while adding a .320 on base percentage and a .331 slugging percentage. Herzog came up big in the circle, in her last five appearances, she allowed just three earned runs while picking up three saves and a win. The freshman also led the team with four saves while adding three victories on the year.

Jill Karwoski will guide Quinnipiac in her third season as the Bobcats head coach in the hopes of improving on a 2015 season that saw the Quinnipiac finish the year at 18-33 overall and 8-12 in the MAAC.
